If you are arriving with a full head of longer hair, say so when you book or as soon as you sit down. A first mohawk from long hair takes more off than any other cut we do, and we would rather agree every measurement at the mirror before the first pass than after.

Once the sides are down, the width can only get narrower until the hair grows, so if you are unsure, start wider. Keep a photo of your long hair if you like it; getting it back takes many months.

If you wear a beard, book Haircut + Beard so the sides and the beard are shaped as one outline. You have two choices at the sideburn, and we ask which you want before we start.

• Blend it: the skin fade on the side flows down into the beard, a fade-into-beard blend that Mark leans toward. The head and face read as one continuous shape.
• Break it: the side goes to skin and the beard starts cleanly below the sideburn, which makes the strip stand out even more.

Toning it down for an interview or a new job

A mohawk cannot be hidden, but it can be made quieter on the next visit. Ask us to leave the sides a guard or two longer and cut the strip shorter, and within a couple of weeks it reads closer to a faux hawk, which you can flatten on the day.
