Mohawk Haircut: Strip Width, Fade Options and Wearing It Up or Down

Short answer: A mohawk haircut takes the sides of the head very short or to bare skin and leaves a single strip of longer hair running from the forehead to the nape. Modern versions blend the sides with a skin fade or a burst fade instead of shaving them flat. The strip is usually 5 to 8 cm wide and can be spiked straight up, pushed into a textured ridge or left to fall to one side.

What makes it a true mohawk

The defining feature is contrast: the sides are so short that the strip stands alone, with a clear edge where long meets short. If the sides still have visible length, you are looking at a faux hawk instead.

The strip normally runs the full length of the head, from the front hairline over the crown to the nape. Some people stop it at the crown and fade the back, which is technically a shortened mohawk and reads more like a fade with a ridge.

Choosing the strip width

Strip width changes the whole character of the cut, and it is the decision people most often forget to make before sitting down. We usually measure it against the width between your eyebrow arches, then adjust for head shape.

A narrow strip, around 4 to 5 cm, is the punk look: aggressive and tall when spiked. A wider strip of 7 to 9 cm is more wearable, covers more of the crown and looks more like a deliberate haircut when it is down. On a wide or round head, a strip that is too narrow looks lost; on a narrow head, a wide strip loses the mohawk shape.

We mark the edges with a trimmer before any clipper goes near the sides, so you can see it in the mirror and ask for it wider before anything is committed.

Shaved, faded or burst: the three side treatments

The sides are where most of the style decisions sit. Each version gives the strip a different frame.

Wearing it up versus down

Up is the classic look and needs length and hold. For a spiked strip you want at least 8 to 10 cm, a blow dryer and a strong product. Down, the same strip can fall to one side over the fade and looks almost like an undercut, which is how a lot of people wear it on weekdays.

  1. Towel dry, then blow dry the strip straight up, pinching the hair between fingers as you dry.
  2. Work a strong-hold gel or paste through from root to tip while the hair is still warm.
  3. Pinch sections into points or a single ridge, working from the front to the back.
  4. Finish with a light mist of hairspray if it needs to survive wind or a helmet.

Mohawk or faux hawk?

The short answer is the sides: a mohawk has almost nothing there and a faux hawk keeps some. A faux hawk leaves enough on the sides to be combed toward the centre and can be flattened for work, while a true mohawk is visible at any angle and in any setting.

If you are unsure, start with a faux hawk or a burst-faded version. Taking the sides down later is easy; growing shaved sides back to match takes six weeks or more. Our mohawk vs faux hawk comparison goes further into the choice.

Upkeep and scalp care

Bare sides need attention every week or two to keep the edge clean, and the strip needs trimming every five or six weeks to hold its shape. Between visits, do not try to edge the strip at home: one slip narrows it permanently until it grows back.

Exposed sides burn in summer, so use sunscreen on the scalp. In winter, a toque will flatten the strip, which is one reason many people switch to a faux hawk from December to March. Book the sides as a Haircut Only, or add the beard with our Haircut + Beard service.

Mohawk haircut: common questions

How long does hair need to be for a mohawk?

The strip can be any length, but to spike it you need 8 cm or more. Shorter strips of 3 to 5 cm are worn as a textured ridge.

Can I get a mohawk with curly hair?

Yes. Curly and coily strips make great mohawks, often shaped rather than spiked. A mohawk in Afro-textured hair is usually called a frohawk.

Is a mohawk allowed at work or school?

That depends on the dress code. If you are unsure, a burst-faded version worn down is far less noticeable than shaved sides with a spiked strip.
