If this is your first mid taper with us, the appointment goes like this. Anyone wondering what the cut actually is, or how it differs from a low taper, should start with our mid taper fade guide.

1. Show us your reference photo and how you wear your fringe or top day to day.
2. We look at growth around each ear and at the nape, and mark the taper height on both sides.
3. The sides and top are cut to length first, mostly with scissors, so the taper has a finished shape to blend into.
4. Clippers take the sideburns, the area around the ear and the nape down to your chosen finish.
5. Detailing and a razor lineup, then the free hot towel, hair wash and head massage.
6. We style the top and show you how much product to use.

Glasses and a mid taper

Glasses change where a mid taper should sit, because the arms rest exactly where the taper clears hair above the ear. Set too low, the arms push hair out into little tufts; set right, they rest on short hair and the frames look cleaner.

Keeping a fringe right between visits

A fringe over a mid taper grows into your eyes before the taper looks overdue, so the fringe usually sets your rebooking date. Most clients come back at about three weeks, when the fringe starts touching the brows.

Between cuts, push the fringe slightly to one side with a matte product rather than trimming it yourself; a home fringe trim with bathroom scissors almost always leaves a blunt line that takes weeks to grow out. If you only need the edges refreshed, book a Haircut Only anyway and tell us it is a tidy-up.

The mid taper holds up well through the seasons here. In humid summer weeks the cleared area around the ears stops hair puffing out, and a light sea salt spray keeps the top from going flat.
