How the included wash fits a curly cut

Every service at Markcutit includes a hair wash, hot towel treatment and head massage, but on a curly fade the order matters. We shape the curly top dry first, then wash, so the wash never hides the pattern we are cutting to.

After the wash you decide how you leave. Some clients want curl product applied so they see the finished definition; others would rather go home clean and style it themselves. Tell us which, and if your skin or scalp reacts to certain products, mention that before anything goes on.

Two rhythms for rebooking

A curly fade runs on two clocks: the sides soften in two to three weeks, while the curls on top can go around six weeks before they need reshaping. Rather than waiting for both, book the fade on its own schedule and fold the top into every second visit.

Both kinds of visit book as Haircut Only; tell us at the start whether the curls need cutting that day. Keeping the same barber helps here too, because they know where your curl pattern changes and where the blend sat last time.

• Week 0: full cut, sides and curls.
• Weeks 2 to 3: fade refresh and lineup; curls left alone.
• Weeks 5 to 6: full cut again, with the top shaped dry.

Curls through a Mississauga winter

Winter is the hardest season for a curly top here. Indoor heating dries the air, a toque crushes the curls and rubs the cuticle, and the result by February is often frizz rather than definition.

A satin-lined hat or a quick switch to a looser beanie helps, and so does refreshing the curls with a little water and leave-in once you are indoors. Our guide on avoiding hat hair has more.
