Number 2 Haircut: The Most Requested Buzz Length, With or Without a Fade
Short answer: A number 2 haircut uses a No. 2 clipper guard to leave about 6 mm (1/4 inch) of hair, either all over the head as a buzz cut or on the sides under a longer top. It is the most requested buzz length because it covers the scalp on most hair while still looking clean and short. Adding a low or mid fade below it and a razor lineup is what makes a simple 2 look finished.

Why a 2 is the default buzz length
A 2 sits in the middle of the short range, and that is exactly why it gets asked for so much. It is short enough to feel like a proper buzz, to need no styling and to dry in minutes, yet long enough that most dark or medium hair reads as a solid colour rather than a scalp with stubble.
It is also forgiving of head shape. Small bumps and a slightly flat crown that would show at a 1 are softened at 6 mm. For most people trying a buzz for the first time, a 2 or a 3 is where we suggest starting.
All over or just on the sides?
"A number 2" can mean two completely different haircuts, so it is worth saying which you mean. All over, it is a classic buzz; see our buzz cut guide for the named variants. On the sides only, it is the most common side length for crew cuts, crops and short back and sides, with a scissor or longer-guard top.
If you want it on the sides, also tell us how long the top should be. "A 2 on the sides, 4 cm on top" and "a 2 on the sides, 8 cm on top" are both 2 haircuts, but they look nothing alike.
Five ways to wear a number 2
The guard stays the same in each of these; what changes is what happens below it and at the edges.
| Version | Below the 2 | Look |
|---|---|---|
| Plain 2 all over | Nothing, one length to the neckline | Simple, even, grows out evenly |
| 2 with a tapered neck | Sideburns and nape taken to a 1 or 0.5 | Tidy edges, still soft |
| 2 with a low skin fade | Bare skin at the bottom blending up to the 2 | Clean, sharp, most popular |
| 2 with a high fade | Skin up to the temples, 2 only on the top | Military, very tight |
| 2 on the sides, longer top | Fade or taper below, scissor top above | Crew cut or crop |
Adding a fade: what changes
A fade below a 2 creates contrast, which is what makes a buzz look sharp instead of simply short. The lower the fade starts, the more of the 2 you keep; a low skin fade is the one we cut most on a 2 buzz because it gives clean edges without making the top look like a small cap.
The cost of a fade is upkeep. The skin at the bottom shows regrowth within about a week, while the 2 on top can go two or three weeks. That is why many people with a faded 2 book every two to three weeks. Our skin fades service covers the heights, and the journal post on low, mid or high fades helps you choose.
Keeping a 2 fresh at home
The top of a 2 buzz is the easiest part of any haircut to maintain yourself, and we are happy for you to do it.
- Buy the same brand of guard your barber uses if you can, since a 2 from one brand is not always exactly 6 mm from another.
- Clip the 2 on firmly and check the lever position matches: closed is shortest.
- Work on dry hair, against the grain, in overlapping strokes from front to back.
- Stop at the fade line and the edges; a fade needs several guards and a view of the back, so leave that to the next visit.
- Rinse and brush off, then check the crown in two mirrors for missed patches.
Who a 2 might not suit
Very fine, light-coloured hair shows a lot of scalp even at 6 mm, so a 3 often looks fuller. Pronounced head-shape features can still show from some angles. And if your hair is thick and grows fast, a 2 can look fuzzy within five days; a lightly faded version hides that better. On curly or coily hair a 2 can look stunning, and a 2 on top with a low fade is a strong starting point for 360 waves once it grows a little longer.
Number 2 haircut: common questions
How long is a number 2 haircut in inches?
About a quarter of an inch, or 6 mm. Guards from different brands can vary by half a millimetre either way.
Is a number 2 too short for a first buzz?
It suits most people, but if you are nervous about your head shape, start at a 3 and go down next time. You cannot put hair back after a 2.
Does a number 2 suit a receding hairline?
Yes. A short, even length reduces the contrast between the temples and the rest of the hairline, so recession looks less obvious.
Is a 1 or a 2 better for summer?
A 1 is cooler; a 2 protects the scalp slightly better from sun. See our number 1 haircut page for the shorter option.
