Number 1 Haircut: What 3 mm All Over Really Looks Like
Short answer: A number 1 haircut is clipped all over with a No. 1 guard, leaving about 3 mm (1/8 inch) of hair. On most people the scalp is visible through it, especially under overhead light and on fine or light-coloured hair, and every bump or flat spot on the head shows. It looks sharp for about a week, needs sun protection on the scalp, and is easy to keep at home with your own clipper.

How much scalp a 1 shows on different hair
At 3 mm, hair stops covering the skin completely, so the result depends heavily on colour, density and texture. The same guard can look like a dark cap on one head and nearly shaved on another.
| Hair | What a No. 1 looks like |
|---|---|
| Dark, dense, straight | Solid shadow; scalp only shows up close or under bright light |
| Dark, coarse or coily | Even, velvety dark layer; the best case for a 1 |
| Light brown or blonde | Scalp clearly visible; looks close to shaved from a distance |
| Grey or white | Almost disappears; reads as a bald head with a soft sheen |
| Thinning on top | Evens out the contrast between thin and full areas |
A 1 is honest about your head shape
Nothing hides at 3 mm. Ridges at the crown, a flat back, a dip behind the ears, scars and moles all show, and the hairline's exact shape is on display. That is not a reason to avoid it; it is a reason to check before committing.
If you have never been this short, try a No. 3 first and look at the back of your head in a two-mirror setup, then step down. Our page on choosing a number walks through that stepped approach. In the chair, we run a hand over the back of your head during the consultation and will tell you honestly if a 2 would sit better.
- Feel for a flat patch at the back; a 1 will show it clearly from the side.
- Look for a raised ridge along the crown or a pronounced occipital bone.
- Note any scars; we can leave those areas a touch longer.
- Check whether your ears sit out from the head; very short sides make them more noticeable.
Sun and cold with only 3 mm of cover
Three millimetres gives the scalp very little protection. A sunburnt scalp can happen on a single afternoon at a Mississauga patio in July, so use sunscreen on the scalp or wear a cap whenever you will be outside for long.
Winter is the other side of it. The head loses heat noticeably faster at this length, and cold wind can leave the scalp dry and flaky. A toque is not optional in January, and a fragrance-free moisturiser on the scalp helps if it gets tight or itchy. If flaking persists or becomes inflamed, see a doctor or dermatologist.
Upkeep: why a 1 grows out so fast
Hair grows roughly a third of a millimetre a day, so a No. 1 cut on Monday is about 5 mm by the following Monday, roughly two-thirds longer than it started. That is why a 1 looks overdue much sooner than longer lengths do.
Most people who wear a 1 all over keep it up themselves once or twice a week with a home clipper, working against the grain. The barbershop visit every two to four weeks is for the parts that are hard to do yourself: a low fade at the neckline and sideburns, an even back, and a razor lineup. See whether to touch up at home for where to stop.
A 1 on the sides only
Many people who ask for a 1 actually mean the sides. A No. 1 on the sides under a longer top gives a clean, tight frame without the full-head exposure. It pairs well with a crew cut or a short crop, and blending it down to skin at the bottom turns it into a mid or high fade.
If you have a beard, a 1 all over can make the beard look heavier by contrast. Faded sideburns bridge the two; our Haircut + Beard service blends them in one visit.
Lever open, lever closed
On most barber clippers, the lever changes the result by roughly half a guard. A 1 with the lever closed is the full 3 mm cut short; with the lever open it sits closer to a 1.5 and shows less scalp. If you liked a previous 1, ask which way the lever was so you can repeat it. For the whole set of sizes, see our clipper guard chart.
Number 1 haircut: common questions
Is a number 1 haircut bald?
No. A 1 leaves about 3 mm, which shows scalp but still reads as hair. Bald means no guard or a razor finish.
Should I choose a 1 or a 2?
A 2 hides more scalp and head shape; a 1 looks sharper and cooler. Our number 1 vs number 2 comparison puts them side by side.
How long does a number 1 take to grow back to a normal cut?
Expect about two months to reach a short crew or crop length, and three to four months before the top can be parted.
