Number 3 Haircut: A Soft Short Length That Hides the Scalp
Short answer: A number 3 haircut uses a No. 3 guard to leave about 10 mm (3/8 inch) of hair. That is the point where most hair fully covers the scalp and feels soft rather than bristly, so it looks like short hair rather than a buzz. It works all over as a gentle first buzz, but it is most often used on the sides under a longer scissor top, with a taper at the neckline to keep the edges clean.

What 10 mm looks and feels like
Run your hand over a 3 and it feels like a dense brush that bends under your palm, not stubble. Visually, the hair lies in its natural direction instead of standing straight out, so you can see how it grows around the crown and the whorl.
That natural direction is why a 3 looks more like a haircut and less like a clipper job. It is a length people rarely comment on, which is exactly what many men want from it.
Why a 3 is the safe first step into short hair
If you are coming from longer hair and want to go short, a 3 is the length we usually suggest for the first round. It hides most bumps, scars and flat spots, and it shows you what short hair feels like without the full reveal of a 1 or 2.
After a week or two, you will know whether you want to go shorter. Stepping down is quick; stepping back up takes a month. Our number 2 haircut page covers the next step if you decide you want more of a buzz.
Longer tops that pair with 3 on the sides
A 3 on the sides is long enough to connect gracefully into a scissor top without a harsh step. These are the pairings we cut most often.
- Crew cut: 3 on the sides with 2.5 to 4 cm on top, longest at the front. A classic office cut.
- Ivy League: 3 on the sides, about 5 cm on top to part. See the Ivy League haircut.
- Textured crop: 3 blending into 4 to 5 cm of choppy texture, pushed forward.
- Side part: 3 tapered lower down, with 6 to 7 cm on top combed across.
- Curly top: 3 on the sides so the sides do not look bare next to the volume.
How a 3 behaves on curly and coily hair
On curly or coily hair, 10 mm is enough for the curl pattern to start showing, so a 3 all over produces soft, dense texture rather than a flat buzz. It is a common length for a first step toward waves or twists.
The catch is that coils at this length can mat slightly if left uncombed, and the shape can drift uneven as sections grow at different rates. Brushing daily with a soft brush keeps it level. We cut coily hair dry so the length we see is the length you will wear, and we taper the edges so the outline stays crisp.
Finishing the edges: taper, not skin
A 3 left at full length all the way down the neck looks unfinished, because the neckline grows into a fuzzy edge within days. The standard fix is a taper: we step the length down through a 2 and a 1 at the nape and sideburns, over just a few centimetres.
A skin fade under a 3 is possible, but the contrast between 10 mm and bare skin is large and needs a longer blend. Most people who choose a 3 want something soft, so a taper suits it better. Our taper fades service is where this lives, and fade vs taper explains the difference.
- Cut the sides and back with the 3 against the grain.
- Taper the nape and sideburns through a 2, then a 1, over 2 to 3 cm.
- Clean around the ears with a trimmer.
- Line up the front and neckline with a razor.
How a 3 grows out
A 3 holds its shape well because a few extra millimetres make a smaller proportional difference at 10 mm than at 3 or 6. Around week three the edges soften and the sides start to push out slightly above the ears. By week five it looks like a short, grown-in haircut rather than a neat one. Booking every three to four weeks keeps it consistently tidy.
Number 3 haircut: common questions
How long is a number 3 haircut in inches?
Roughly three-eighths of an inch, or about 10 mm. It is the first guard length where most hair hides the scalp.
Is a number 3 a buzz cut?
All over, yes; it is a soft, longer buzz sometimes called a butch. On the sides only, it is simply a short side length under a longer top.
Will a 3 hide thinning hair?
A 3 all over hides early thinning well by reducing contrast. If the crown shows through even at 10 mm, a shorter 1 or 2 usually looks more even.
