Number 1 vs Number 2 Haircut: 3 mm or 6 mm, and How Much Scalp Shows

Short answer: In a number 1 haircut the clipper runs over the whole head fitted with a number 1 guard, leaving about 3 mm (1/8 inch), short enough that scalp shows through on most hair. A number 2 uses a No. 2 guard and leaves about 6 mm (1/4 inch), which on dark or thick hair reads as solid colour and hides more of the head's shape. Choose a 1 for the sharpest, coolest buzz and a 2 if you want coverage and a softer look.

A No. 1 and a No. 2, in numbers

The two guards are one step apart, but that step doubles the length. Most clipper guards move in roughly 3 mm jumps, so the difference between a 1 and a 2 is proportionally the biggest you will see anywhere on the guard chart. The full chart is on our clipper guard numbers page.

How much scalp you will actually see

With a No. 1, scalp shows on almost everyone. The hair is short enough that light passes between the strands, so the head reads as a shadow of hair over skin. That can look sharp and clean, and it is the reason a 1 feels very close to a shaved head.

With a No. 2, the result depends on your hair. Dark, dense or coarse hair at 6 mm covers the scalp and looks like a solid, even colour. Fine, blond or grey hair still lets the scalp show through at a 2, and some clients with light hair go to a 3 to get the coverage a dark-haired client gets at a 2.

Head shape, scars and thinning

Shorter means more honest. A number 1 haircut shows everything: a flat spot at the back, a ridge, a bump at the crown, old scars or a birthmark. If you have a well-rounded head, that is a feature. If you do not, the 3 extra millimetres of a 2 soften a lot.

Thinning works the other way. Once hair is receding or thinning at the crown, a 1 often looks better than a 2, because the contrast between thin and thick areas is lower when everything is very short. A number 2 haircut can make a thin crown look patchier next to thicker sides.

How each one grows out

Scalp hair grows roughly 1 to 1.5 cm a month, about 3 mm a week. That is a whole guard every week or so, and it changes a 1 far more than a 2 in proportion:

  • No. 1, week one: the crisp velvet look is already softening; it now looks like a fresh 2.
  • No. 1, week two: roughly the length of a 3, and the sharpness has gone.
  • No. 2, week one: close to a 3, still reads as a neat buzz.
  • No. 2, weeks two to three: approaching a 4, softer but tidy, and the neckline is what looks overdue first.
  • Either one: the outline at the ears and neck fuzzes out before the length becomes a problem, which is why a lineup matters more than the guard.

Which one to choose

Pick a No. 1 if you want the closest, cleanest buzz without going to skin, run hot or play sport in summer humidity, have a good head shape, or are evening out a receding hairline. Pick a No. 2 if you want coverage and a softer look, have a flat or bumpy area at the back, need to look conventional at work, or are trying a buzz for the first time.

In Mississauga winters the extra 3 mm of a 2 also feels noticeably warmer under a toque, and many regulars go from a 1 in July to a 2 in January. If you are unsure, start at a 2: you can always go shorter in the same visit, and you cannot go longer.

Getting it cut, and keeping it at home

Ask by guard and finish: 'A No. 1 all over, lever closed, with a taper at the neck and a razor lineup', or the same with a No. 2. A fade underneath, such as a skin fade into the 1 or 2, is what turns a plain buzz into a finished cut, and our skin fades service shows how that looks.

Between visits you can keep either length yourself with a clipper and the same guard every week, then come in every two to four weeks for the fade and the edges. Book it as Haircut Only on Booksy; the hot towel, wash and head massage come with it.

Number 1 vs number 2 haircut: common questions

Is a number 1 the same as a 1/8 inch cut?

Yes. A No. 1 guard leaves about 3 mm, which is 1/8 inch, though brands differ by a fraction of a millimetre.

What about a 1.5?

A 1.5 is either a half guard of about 4.5 mm or a No. 1 with the clipper lever open. It is a good compromise if a 1 feels too bare and a 2 too soft.

Will a number 1 irritate my scalp?

Most people are fine. Very short cuts can leave coarse hair prone to bumps on the neck; keep the area clean and see a doctor or dermatologist if bumps persist or become painful.
