Beard Cheek Line: Natural, Sharp or Lowered, and Which to Choose
Short answer: A beard cheek line is the upper edge of your beard across each cheek, running from the sideburn to the corner of the moustache. You can leave it natural (only strays removed), razor it sharp along your own growth line, or lower it for a tighter shape. Lowering it too far makes the beard look smaller and the face wider, and fixing that takes several weeks of regrowth.

Three ways to wear a cheek line
There is no single correct cheek line; there are three broad choices, and the right one depends on how dense your cheeks grow and how polished you want the beard to look.
| Cheek line | What is done | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Natural | Only stray hairs above the growth edge are removed | Full, rugged beards; people with a clean natural edge |
| Sharp | A crisp razor edge set on or just below your natural line | Most beards; the default for a groomed look |
| Lowered | The line is moved noticeably down the cheek | High, scattered cheek growth; very tight short beards |
Where a sharp cheek line should run
A good sharp line usually runs as a gentle, slightly curved diagonal from the bottom of the sideburn to the corner of the moustache. It follows the natural edge of your growth, cutting off the sparse wispy hairs above it, rather than inventing a new shape.
We shape it with a trimmer first and then finish with a straight razor after the hot towel, which is what gives the edge its crispness. A razor edge on the cheek is also why the line looks sharp for several days and then softens as the stubble returns.
- A slight downward curve toward the mouth reads as natural; a dead-straight diagonal can look severe.
- Both sides should start and finish at matching heights, measured from the ear and the mouth corner.
- The top of the line should blend into the sideburn or the beard fade without a corner.
Why going too low shrinks the beard
Every millimetre you take off the top of the cheek line removes beard from the widest part of your face. Lower it too far and the beard turns into a band along the jaw, the cheeks look broader and fuller, and the face can look rounder than it is.
It also exposes more of your skin between the beard and the eyes, which shifts attention away from the jaw. The beard can start to look like a chin strap that has grown out, particularly on a round face. If that is the shape you actually want, a chin strap beard is a deliberate version of it.
How long a cheek line mistake takes to grow back
Hair on the cheeks returns as stubble in a day or two, but the line only looks fixed once that new hair matches the length of the rest of the beard. Beard hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, so the wait depends on how long you keep your beard.
For a stubble beard at 3 mm, a lowered line is back in about a week. At 1 cm it is closer to a month, and a full beard at 3 cm or more can need two months or longer. During that time we can keep the mistake less visible by blending the regrowth, but we cannot speed it up.
Handling the cheek line at home
Shave only the stubble that is clearly above the line, working with small strokes away from the edge rather than toward it. Never try to redraw the line itself in a steamy bathroom mirror, which is exactly how one side ends up lower than the other.
If a stray patch sits right on the edge and you are not sure, leave it. A Beard Only + Lineup every one to two weeks resets both sides evenly, and our guide to keeping your beard sharp covers the rest.
Beard cheek line: common questions
Should I shave my cheeks above the beard every day?
Not necessarily. Every two to three days keeps the line readable for most people, and shaving less often is gentler on the skin.
My cheek growth is patchy near the top. Should I lower the line?
Lowering slightly to the point where the growth becomes dense usually looks best. Going below that point just creates a new edge in a thin area; see our patchy beard page.
Can a barber fix a cheek line I cut too low?
We can even out both sides and blend the regrowth so it looks intentional, but the full line only returns once the hair has grown back to match the beard.
