What Does a Beard Trim Include? A Barber's Step-by-Step
Short answer: A proper barbershop beard trim includes a short consultation, reducing bulk and setting length with clippers and scissors, shaping the beard to your jaw, defining the cheek line and neckline, sharpening the edges with a razor, and tidying the moustache clear of the lip. At Markcutit this is the Beard Only + Lineup service, and like every service it includes a hot towel, hair wash and head massage.

The six parts of a full beard trim
A barbershop beard trim is more than running a guard over the jaw. It usually moves through these stages, in roughly this order.
- Consultation: your barber looks at density, growth direction, patchy areas and your face shape, and asks how long you want it and how you maintain it.
- Bulk and length: clippers with a guard, or scissors over a comb, bring the beard to an even working length and remove weight from the sides.
- Shaping: the beard is sculpted to your jaw, usually a little shorter on the cheeks and fuller at the chin to add structure.
- Lines: the cheek line and the neckline are set with a trimmer where they flatter your face.
- Razor edges: a straight razor with a fresh blade cleans everything outside those lines for a crisp finish.
- Moustache and detail: hair is trimmed clear of the top lip, stray hairs are caught, and the finished shape is checked from each side.
Where the neckline and cheek line go
The neckline usually sits about one to two finger widths above the Adam's apple, curving back towards the ears. Set it too high and the jaw looks small and the beard looks like a chin strap; too low and it reads as untrimmed neck hair.
The cheek line is a matter of shape and density. Many barbers follow your natural line and only clean stray hairs above it, which keeps the beard looking full. A sharper, lower line suits denser beards and gives a more groomed look. We cover both lines in detail in our guides to the beard neckline and the beard cheek line.
Beard trim versus beard lineup versus full service
The words get used loosely, so it helps to know what each one generally covers.
| Service | What it covers | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Lineup only | Edges on cheek, neck and hairline | Keeping lines crisp between trims |
| Beard trim | Length, shape, lines, razor edges, moustache | Regular maintenance of a grown beard |
| Haircut plus beard | Full haircut with beard shaped to match | Blending a fade into the beard |
How it works at Markcutit
On the Markcutit menu, a standalone beard trim is booked as Beard Only + Lineup. It covers the shaping, lines and razor edges above, and it is the right choice between haircuts or while growing a beard out. Details are on the beard trim and lineup service page.
If you want your hair cut in the same visit, book Haircut + Beard instead. When one barber does both, the fade on the sides and the beard are blended as one shape, with no step where the sideburn meets the cheek.
Every beard appointment includes a hot towel treatment, which softens the beard before the razor goes along the edges, plus the hair wash and head massage. Our page on what a hot towel does at the barber explains why it helps the lines.
Coming in for a trim during a grow-out
You do not need a long beard to benefit from a trim. During the awkward early weeks, a barber can keep the neckline and cheeks clean while leaving length where you want it to build, so it looks deliberate at every stage.
Tell your barber the end goal, for example a full beard or a short boxed beard, so they trim towards it rather than just tidying. Our guides on how long to grow a beard before trimming and beard growth stages help with the timeline.
How to prepare for a beard trim
Come with a clean beard and skip heavy balm or wax on the day, so the barber sees its true density and shape. A little oil in the morning is fine.
Know roughly what length you want, or bring a photo. And if you have sensitive skin or tend to get bumps along the neck, mention it, so the razor work can be adjusted.
What does a beard trim include: common questions
Does a beard trim include the moustache?
Yes, a full beard trim normally includes trimming the moustache clear of the lip and tidying its edges. Mention it if you are growing it longer on purpose.
Does a beard trim include a shave?
It includes razor work on the edges, not a full shave. Markcutit does not offer full straight razor shaves as a service.
How often should I get a beard trim?
Many people get the lines refreshed every one to two weeks and a fuller reshape less often. See how often to trim your beard for more detail.
Can I get my hairline lined up with a beard trim?
Yes. The lineup in Beard Only + Lineup can include sharpening the hairline edges as well as the beard.
