Extended Goatee: How Far to Extend It, Who It Suits and How to Ask
Short answer: An extended goatee is a connected moustache and chin beard whose sides are carried out along the jawline, usually stopping somewhere between the corner of the mouth and the angle of the jaw, with the cheeks and sideburns shaved clean. It squares off the lower face and gives a strong chin effect without the bulk of a full beard. Book it as Beard Only + Lineup.

What separates an extended goatee from a regular goatee
The difference is width: a regular goatee stays roughly as wide as the mouth, while an extended goatee keeps going sideways along the jaw. The moustache still connects down into the chin, but the chin piece grows wings that follow the bone toward the ears.
It is not a full beard either. The upper cheeks, the sideburns and the area in front of the ears stay bare, so the hair sits in a band across the bottom of the face. If you want the compact version without the wings, our page on the classic goatee covers it, and goatee vs Van Dyke explains the disconnected cousin.
How far should an extended goatee go along the jaw?
Most faces look best when the extension stops about two thirds of the way from the chin to the angle of the jaw. That point widens the chin visibly but leaves a clear gap of bare skin before the ear, which is what stops it reading as a chin strap or an unfinished full beard.
We pick the stopping point in the chair by looking at where your jaw starts to turn upward. Ending the wing just before that turn keeps the line horizontal and strong. Going past it drags the eye up toward the ear and softens the effect you came for.
| Extension | Where it ends | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Short | About 1 cm past the mouth corner | Subtle; adds chin width, close to a regular goatee |
| Mid | Two thirds of the way to the jaw angle | Squares the lower face; the version most people ask for |
| Long | Just short of the jaw angle | Maximum width; suits long or narrow faces |
Who the extended goatee suits
It works hardest on faces that need width or definition at the bottom. Because the wings follow the jaw, they draw a horizontal line that the eye reads as a stronger chin.
- Long or oblong faces: the horizontal band shortens how long the face looks.
- Round faces: a sharp lower edge and shaved cheeks add angles where the face has few.
- A soft or receding chin: extra length at the centre of the chin pushes the profile forward.
- Cheeks that grow patchy while the chin and jaw fill in well: you keep the dense zones and shave the weak one.
How we shape it in the chair
We treat it as a lineup job more than a trim, because the whole style lives or dies on clean edges against bare skin.
- Consultation: we mark where your jaw turns and agree how far the wings run before anything is cut.
- Clear the cheeks and sideburns with the clipper, working from the ear down so no stray patches are left above the new line.
- Take the goatee and wings to an even length, usually a #2 or #3 guard (6 to 10 mm) on the jaw with a little more left at the centre of the chin.
- Set the neckline underneath so the wings have a defined bottom edge rather than fading into the neck.
- Trim the moustache clear of the lip and square the corners where it drops into the chin.
- Finish every edge with the razor after a hot towel, then check symmetry side to side in the mirror with you.
Keeping it sharp at home between visits
The bare cheeks are the part that goes first. Stubble starts to blur the top edge of the wings within three or four days, so a quick pass with a foil shaver or a guardless trimmer above the line is the one job worth doing yourself.
Leave the actual edges of the goatee alone unless you are confident. It is easy to take a wing a few millimetres higher on one side, and chasing the other side to match is how an extended goatee turns into a narrow one. Our guide to keeping your beard sharp between visits covers the rest of the routine, and a Beard Only + Lineup every one to two weeks resets the geometry.
Extended goatee: common questions
Can I grow an extended goatee from a full beard?
Yes, and it is the fastest route because the length is already there. We shave the cheeks and sideburns away and shape the remaining band in a single visit.
Does an extended goatee look professional?
Kept short and lined up, it reads as tidy in most offices. At longer lengths or with a pointed chin it starts to look more like a statement style.
What haircut goes with an extended goatee?
Because there are no sideburns, a fade that runs tight above the ear pairs naturally, for example a mid fade. Longer sides can look disconnected from a beard that stops at the jaw.
Is an extended goatee the same as a chin strap?
No. A chin strap beard is a thin line that runs all the way up to the sideburns. The extended goatee includes a moustache, stays thicker at the chin and stops well before the ear.
