Neck Taper: Keep Your Length and Clean Up Only the Neckline

Short answer: A neck taper is a haircut where only the neckline at the nape is tapered short with clippers, while the sides, back and top stay at scissor length. It is the smallest clipper job a barber can do, and it is the easiest way to keep longer hair, a flow, a mullet or a grow-out looking deliberate rather than overdue.

The nape is the only part that gets short

With a neck taper, the clipper work is confined to the lowest few centimetres at the back of the head, where the hairline meets the neck. The hair there is faded from very short at the bottom into the scissor length above, so the neckline looks clean instead of fuzzy.

The sideburns are usually left alone or just trimmed with scissors, and nothing above the ear is touched by clippers. That is the key difference from a low taper fade, which also blends the sideburns.

Why the neckline decides whether long hair looks cared for

Longer hair looks overdue mainly because of the neckline. Stray hairs growing down the neck, a fuzzy edge above the collar or a ragged line where hair meets skin all say the same thing: nobody has been near this for months.

Tapering that one area resets the whole impression. The length on top and at the sides can be exactly the same as before, but with a clean nape the cut looks like a choice. It is the same principle behind a good beard neckline; see tapered vs blocked neckline for why we prefer a taper over a hard block on most people.

Styles that rely on a neck taper

A neck taper is the finishing detail for any style where the length is the point. Four we see most often in the shop:

  • The bro flow: hair swept back and falling behind the ears, often over a hockey helmet. The neck taper keeps the flow from turning into a shag.
  • The modern mullet: the back is long, but a tapered edge at the very bottom keeps it neat.
  • Medium-length scissor cuts: 8 to 12 cm all over with a clean nape for a polished finish.
  • Curtains and middle parts: the front hangs long while the back stays tidy at the collar.

Using a neck taper to grow your hair out

A neck taper is the tool that gets people through the awkward stage of growing out a fade or short cut. Most of the ugliness in that stage comes from the back and the ears, not the top.

Here is how we usually schedule a grow-out with our clients, starting from a short fade:

  1. Stop fading the sides; let the barber only tidy the neckline and around the ears.
  2. Around weeks 6 to 8, the sides cover the tops of the ears. Get the sides evened with scissors and keep the neck taper.
  3. Around months 3 to 4, the back reaches the collar. Decide whether you want it to flow or keep it tight at the nape.
  4. From then on, book a neck taper and a light shape every 5 to 6 weeks while the rest grows.

How the taper is placed on longer hair

On longer hair, the neck taper has to sit low enough that the hair above falls over it. If it climbs too high, you see a short patch under a curtain of hair when you tie it up or the wind blows, which looks like a mistake.

We look at your natural neckline and growth direction first. Many people have hair that grows sideways or upward at the nape, and working with that growth rather than against it keeps the taper from sticking out. Scissor work over the top of the taper then softens the join. See how to grow out a fade for more on the grow-out stage.

Booking a neck taper at Markcutit

A neck taper is booked as a Haircut Only, even though most of the appointment is scissor work. We cover it through both our scissor cuts service and our taper work, and you get the same consultation, razor-clean lineup, hot towel, wash and head massage.

Tell us if you are growing out so we take as little length as possible. Some visits will be almost all clean-up, and that is the point.

Neck taper: common questions

Do barbers do neck tapers on long hair?

Yes. It is one of the most common requests for long and medium hair. See do barbers cut long hair.

Is a neck taper the same as a low taper?

Close but smaller. A low taper usually does both the sideburns and the nape; a neck taper does only the nape.

Can I get a neck taper if I wear my hair in a bun?

Yes, but keep it low so the short patch is hidden when your hair is up. Tell your barber you tie it back.

How long does a neck taper last?

Usually four to six weeks, since the rest of the cut is long and the nape is the only part that shows regrowth.
