Low Fade: Where It Starts, Who It Suits and How It Grows Out

Short answer: A low fade is a fade that begins about a finger-width above the ear and wraps around the back just above the natural neckline, so the shortest hair sits at the very bottom of the head. It keeps most of the side length, which makes it the most conservative, office-friendly fade and the one that grows out most gracefully over three to four weeks.

Where exactly does a low fade start?

A low fade starts on the band of hair that sits just above the top of the ear and follows the hairline down around the occipital area to the nape. In practice we set the shortest point roughly a finger-width over the ear, then keep it level or let it follow your natural perimeter as it moves behind.

Everything above that band stays close to its original length, usually a 2, 3 or 4 guard on the sides before the scissor or clipper work on top begins. That is why a low fade reads as clean rather than dramatic: from the front, most of the side weight is still there.

If you want the line to curve down behind the ear instead of running straight, you are describing a drop fade, which is a separate shape. And if you only want the sideburns and neckline cleaned, that is a low taper fade, not a low fade.

Why a low fade is the safest first fade

A low fade is the right first fade because it shows very little scalp and hides most head-shape quirks. Flat spots at the crown, bumps above the ear and small scars on the upper sides all stay covered by longer hair.

It is also the easiest to walk back from. If you decide fades are not for you, the short band is only a couple of centimetres tall and disappears within a few weeks, so you can grow into a scissor cut without an awkward phase. For more on what to expect in the chair the first time, read your first fade: what to expect.

  • Minimal exposed skin, so less sunburn and less winter cold on the sides.
  • Keeps weight at the temples, which softens a long or narrow face.
  • Passes most dress codes: banks, law offices, customer-facing roles.
  • Works under a toque, a hockey helmet or a hard hat without looking scalped.

Low skin fade or low shadow fade: which finish?

The height stays the same, but the bottom can finish on bare skin or on a very short guard. A low skin fade is taken down with a foil shaver or zero-gap trimmer so the neckline and ear area show skin; a low shadow fade stops at a half guard or a 1 so a faint haze of hair remains.

Skin gives a sharper outline for about a week, then the stubble shows. Shadow looks slightly softer on day one but still looks tidy at week three. If your scalp is sensitive or you burn easily in July, start with shadow; our page on the shadow fade covers that finish in depth.

How a low fade grows out week by week

Scalp hair grows about 1 to 1.5 cm a month, so the difference between a zero and a 1 guard (about 3 mm) closes in roughly a week. That is why the bottom of any fade softens first.

With a low fade, week one is crisp, week two the band looks like a shadow finish, and by week three the sides look like a neat short-back cut. Around week four the neckline starts to fuzz and the hair over the ears touches the rim, which is the signal to rebook. Plenty of men stretch to five weeks with only a lineup in between.

What to wear on top of a low fade

A low fade suits almost any top because it keeps enough side weight to balance length. The only thing to avoid is a very short top, because a buzzed top over a low fade can make the sides look untouched.

Tops we pair with it most often in the shop:

  • Side part or comb-over, 7 to 10 cm on top, for interviews and weddings. See the side part haircut.
  • Textured crop with a short fringe, scissor-cut and pushed forward.
  • Slick back or quiff for straight hair with some length.
  • Loose curls left full, with the low fade cleaning the perimeter only.
  • Medium length with a beard, blended at the sideburn so the line flows into the jaw.

How we cut it at Markcutit

Every low fade starts with a consultation: we check where your ear sits, whether one side of your hairline dips lower, and how you part your hair. Then we set the guideline, build the blend upward with guards and lever work, and detail with a trimmer before a razor-clean lineup.

It is booked as a Haircut Only, and like every service it comes with a hot towel, hair wash and head massage. You can see finished low fades in our portfolio or book through our skin fades service.

Low fade: common questions

Is a low fade professional enough for a corporate job?

Yes. With a shadow finish and a neat top it is one of the most conservative fades there is, and most people will read it as a regular short-back cut.

Can I get a low fade if I have a receding hairline?

Usually yes, because it keeps weight at the temples and draws less attention to the corners. Pair it with a slightly messy or forward top; see haircuts for receding hairlines for options.

How long should my hair be before getting a low fade?

At least 2 to 3 cm on the sides gives us enough length to build a visible blend above the short band. Longer is fine; we simply take more off.

Does a low fade make my ears stick out?

Less than any other fade, since the hair above and behind the ears stays fuller. If ears are a concern, ask for a shadow finish rather than skin.
