Do Barbers Cut Long Hair? Yes, and Here Is What to Ask For

Short answer: Yes. Good barbers cut long hair all the time, using scissors rather than clippers for most of the work: trimming the ends while you grow it out, shaping layers so it falls well, and cleaning up the neckline, ears and sideburns so longer hair still looks intentional. The key is asking for a trim and shape, and being clear about how much length to keep.

What a barber does with longer hair

Cutting long hair is mostly scissor work: the barber sections the hair, checks the length and balance, and cuts with shears, sometimes finishing with point cutting to soften the ends. Clippers only come out for the edges, if at all.

The work falls into three jobs. Length and ends: removing split or uneven ends and keeping the overall shape level. Shape: cutting layers or weight so the hair sits well rather than hanging flat. Perimeter: tidying the neckline, around the ears and the sideburns so the cut looks cared for.

Growing it out: small trims beat no trims

A trim every 6 to 10 weeks, taking off about a centimetre, keeps the ends healthy and helps you get through awkward stages faster than avoiding the barber. Hair grows around a centimetre a month on average, so a small trim still leaves you gaining length.

The most useful trims while growing out are the ones that manage the in-between shape. When the sides start pushing out over the ears, or the back grows faster than the top and starts to look like an unplanned mullet, a barber can reshape the balance while keeping every bit of length that matters. Our guide on growing out a fade walks through the first months.

  • Months 1 to 3: keep the back and sides tidy while the top catches up.
  • Months 3 to 6: hair touches the ears and collar; trim the ends and shape around the ears.
  • Months 6 onward: the hair can be tucked behind the ears or tied; now trims are mainly for ends and layers.

Layers and weight for longer men's hair

Layers are what stop long hair from looking like a heavy triangle. By cutting some hairs shorter than others, a barber lets the top lift and the ends move, which suits wavy and thick hair especially.

On straight, fine hair, fewer layers and a blunter perimeter keep it looking fuller. On thick or wavy hair, more internal layering and texturizing remove weight so the hair falls into shape. Styles like the bro flow, the man bun and the curtain cut all depend on getting that balance right.

The neck taper: the one clipper job on long hair

Even with shoulder-length hair, a clean nape makes the whole look sharper. A neck taper uses clippers or a trimmer only on the lowest part of the neckline, fading the fuzz at the nape into the longer hair above.

It is invisible when your hair is down but shows every time you tie it up, which is why plenty of men with man buns or half-up styles ask for it. The neck taper page covers the style in detail.

Barber or salon for long hair?

It depends on the barber more than the building. Many barbers cut long hair very well; some shops focus heavily on clipper work and fades. The simplest check is their portfolio: if you can see longer scissor cuts on it, they do them regularly.

Salons tend to have an edge with colour, chemical treatments and very long, layered styles. Barbers tend to be stronger on shorter hair around the edges and on combining long tops with tapered sides. For a fuller view, see our barber vs salon comparison.

How to ask, and how it works at Markcutit

Be specific about length. "Just a trim" means different things to different people; "take about 1 cm off the ends, keep it past my ears, clean up the neckline" leaves no room for surprises. Bring a photo of the finished length you want and tell us whether you tie it up.

Long-hair cuts are booked as a Haircut Only on Booksy, the same as any other style, and they include the free hot towel, hair wash and head massage. We cut them with scissors as part of our scissor cuts service.

  1. Show where you want the length to end, in centimetres or by pointing.
  2. Say whether you want layers or a single length.
  3. Mention how you wear it: down, tucked, tied up or in a bun.
  4. Ask for the neckline tapered, blocked or left natural.

Do barbers cut long hair: common questions

Do barbers wash long hair before cutting?

Often yes, since long hair is easier to cut evenly when it is clean and damp. At Markcutit every service already includes a hair wash.

Will a barber cut off too much?

Not if you are clear. Point to the length you want to keep, and ask the barber to show you before they start if you are nervous.

Can I get a fade with long hair on top?

Yes. An undercut or a fade under a long top is a popular combination that keeps length where it shows and cools the sides. See the undercut.
