How Long Does a Fade Last? The Sharp Days and When to Rebook

Short answer: A fade looks at its sharpest for roughly the first 3 to 7 days, still looks like a clean fade for about 2 to 3 weeks, and by week 4 has grown into a regular short haircut. Skin and high fades lose their crispness fastest because more short hair is on show; low and shadow fades hold their shape longest.

The life of a fade, stage by stage

Every fade goes through the same stages, just at different speeds. The bottom band softens first, because a millimetre of regrowth on skin is much more visible than a millimetre on top of a 3 guard.

  • Days 1 to 3: the lineup is razor sharp and the skin band is bare. This is the look in the photos.
  • Days 4 to 7: a light shadow appears on the skin band and the edges start to soften. Most people still call it fresh.
  • Week 2: the bottom now looks like a half guard. The blend is still smooth but the contrast has dropped.
  • Week 3: the gradient has crept up by about a guard. The neckline and the hair around the ears start to look fuzzy.
  • Week 4 and on: the sides read as a short back and sides rather than a fade, and the top has lost its proportion.

Higher fades fade faster

The more skin a fade shows, the sooner it looks grown out. A high fade has a tall skin band, so a few days of stubble changes a large area of your head, whereas a low fade keeps most of its side length and the change stays hidden near the ear.

Finish matters as much as height. A skin or bald fade goes from bare to shadowed in under a week, while a fade that starts at a 0.5 or 1 looks nearly the same on day ten as on day two, because the starting point was already a shadow.

What makes your fade grow out quicker than your friend's

Growth rate is individual. Most people grow roughly a centimetre a month on the scalp, but some grow noticeably faster, and warmer months may feel quicker simply because you notice regrowth more in the heat.

Hair colour and texture also play a part. Dark, coarse hair on light skin shows regrowth as a visible shadow within days. Fine or light hair can go a week longer before anyone notices. Curly and coily hair hides small differences in length, but the lineup around it shows every new hair along the edge. If you want the numbers, see how fast hair grows.

Stretching the time between fades

You can buy extra days without touching the blend. The fade itself is hard to maintain at home, but the edges around it make most of the difference to how fresh it looks.

Keep the neckline clean by shaving only below your natural line, and leave the sideburns and front hairline alone unless you are confident. Moisturise the scalp so the short area does not look dry or flaky under light. And if you want longer between visits, ask for a slightly lower fade or a shadow finish next time. Our guide on making a haircut last longer covers the rest, and it explains why we generally advise against touching up your fade at home.

When to book the next one

Book the next fade before you leave the chair, based on the tipping point for your height. For a high or skin fade, that is usually two weeks; for a mid, two to three; for a low or shadow fade, three to four. Our journal piece on how often to get a haircut goes into rhythm by style.

Fades are booked as a Haircut Only on Booksy, and if your date is tied to an event, time it a few days before rather than the morning of, so the skin band has just a touch of shadow and looks natural in photos. Same-day openings often come up too, so check Booksy or call or text if you need one quickly.

How long does a fade last: common questions

Why does my fade look better on day 3 than day 1?

On day one the skin band can look a little raw or pink next to the hair above it. By day two or three that settles and a faint shadow softens the contrast, which many people prefer.

Can I get just a lineup between fades?

Yes. A lineup on its own tidies the hairline and beard edges and can buy another week. It is booked as Beard Only + Lineup.

Does a fade last longer in winter?

The hair grows at a similar rate, but under a toque nobody sees the neckline, so many people comfortably stretch an extra week between December and March.
