Long on Top Short on Sides Haircut: How to Make the Request Specific

Short answer: A long on top short on sides haircut is an umbrella request that covers dozens of cuts, from a textured crop to a slick back undercut. To get what you picture, add three specifics: how the sides are done (fade, taper, undercut or scissor), how long the top should be in centimetres, and how you plan to wear it (forward, up, to the side or back). Those three answers turn a vague order into a precise one.

Why this request is too vague on its own

Almost every men's haircut today has more length on top than on the sides, so saying it only rules out a buzz cut and long hair. One barber hears "skin fade with a 4 cm crop"; another hears "scissor sides with 10 cm swept back." Both are right.

The fix is not a better photo, although photos help. It is adding the specific choices below, in words your barber can check against. Our journal piece on what to tell your barber covers the general approach; this page applies it to this particular request.

Decision one: what happens on the sides

The side treatment sets the contrast of the whole cut, and it is the part that is hardest to undo. Pick one of these four.

Side optionWhat you getGrows outGood if you
Skin or low fadeShort at the bottom blending up, strong contrastNeeds a visit in 2 to 3 weeksWant a sharp, current look
TaperOnly sideburns and nape short, sides keep weightTidy for 3 to 4 weeksWant it subtle or work-friendly
UndercutOne short length, no blend, top hangs overLine softens over 3 to 4 weeksWant a hard contrast or wear it tied
Scissor sidesShort but full, cut over combGrows evenly for 4 to 6 weeksWant a classic, soft outline

Decision two: how long is "long" on top

Give a number. Centimetres are clearest, but finger widths work too: one finger held against the head is roughly 2 cm. Each band of length suits a different family of styles.

  • 3 to 5 cm: textured crop, French crop, short spikes. Worn forward or up with a little clay.
  • 5 to 8 cm: quiff, faux hawk, side part, comb over. Enough to direct, needs a dryer for lift.
  • 8 to 12 cm: pompadour, brushed back, slick back, longer comb over. Needs product daily.
  • 12 cm and up: undercut worn long, man bun, flow. Ties back or falls over the sides.

Decision three: which way you will wear it

Styling direction affects how the barber cuts the top. Hair meant to go forward is cut with the fringe longest and texturised to break up. Hair meant to go back is cut longest at the front and graduated shorter toward the crown so it lies flat. Hair worn to the side needs a part found and the heavy side left fuller.

If you want to wear it several ways, say so. We can cut a more even top that goes forward on Saturday and back for a wedding, at the cost of it not being perfect in either direction.

The last detail is how the top connects to the sides. "Blended" means there is a smooth transition. "Disconnected" means a visible line where the short sides stop, as in an undercut. Our undercut vs fade comparison shows both.

Three worked examples of a specific order

Here is how the vague version becomes a clear one. Each of these names the sides, the top length and the direction.

"Mid skin fade, 4 cm on top, point cut and pushed forward" gives a textured crop. "Low taper, 6 cm on top, find my part and comb it to the side" gives a modern side part. "No. 2 undercut, no blend, 13 cm on top slicked back" gives a classic disconnected undercut.

If you have your numbers from a previous cut you liked, bring them; our page on describing a haircut in numbers explains how to record them.

Your hair type narrows the options

Thick straight hair can carry every length band above. Fine hair looks best between 3 and 7 cm with lots of texture, because longer fine hair separates and shows the scalp. Wavy hair adds movement and suits 6 to 10 cm. Curly and coily hair shrinks, so ask for more than you want to see; a curly top that looks 5 cm may be 8 cm stretched. Every Markcutit cut starts with a consultation where we check this before the clippers come out.

Long on top short on sides haircut: common questions

What is the haircut called that is long on top and short on the sides?

There is no single name. Depending on length and sides it may be a crop, quiff, comb over, pompadour, slick back or undercut. Describe the parts rather than hunting for the name.

How long should the top be compared with the sides?

For balance, the top is usually at least twice as long as the upper sides. With a skin fade, even 3 cm on top reads as long.

Is long on top short on the sides good for thinning hair?

Short to medium, yes. Keep the top under about 6 cm with texture, since long, flat top hair makes thinning more visible.
