What to tell your barber to get the cut you want

Barber and client talking through a haircut before starting

Short answer: Tell your barber five things: the style or a reference photo, how short you want the sides, how much to take off the top, how you want the neckline finished, and how you style your hair day to day. A good barber will then tell you honestly what will work.

The five-point checklist

Run through these before the first cut and there are no surprises.

  • Style: name it (skin fade, low taper, slick back) or show a photo.
  • Sides: skin, or a guard number such as a 1 or 2.
  • Top: how much length to take off, in centimetres or fingers.
  • Neckline: tapered, rounded or squared.
  • Styling: what product you use and how much time you spend.

Why the photo helps most

Words like “short” or “a bit off” mean different things to different people. A photo fixes the target instantly. Browse our portfolio and screenshot the cuts you like.

Speak up during the cut

If something is heading the wrong way, say so. Good barbers want to know, and it is much easier to adjust mid-cut than afterwards. At Markcutit we explain what we are doing as we go, so you are never guessing.
