Handlebar Mustache: How Long It Takes, Wax and Training the Curl

Short answer: A handlebar mustache is a full moustache whose ends are grown long enough to be twisted outward and curled upward with moustache wax. For a proper curl the hair past each mouth corner needs to be about 3 to 5 cm long, which usually means three to six months of growth without trimming the ends. Daily waxing trains the shape, while a barber keeps the lip line and surrounding face clean.

How much length a handlebar really needs

The curl only holds when there is enough hair to wrap around itself, which in practice means at least 3 cm of hair extending past each corner of the mouth. A small upturn can be faked at 2 cm with strong wax, but it droops by lunchtime.

Facial hair averages around a centimetre of growth a month, and the ends grow no faster than the rest. That is why a real handlebar is a project measured in months, not weeks.

A realistic month-by-month timeline

Growing a handlebar means leaving the outer thirds of the moustache completely uncut while still keeping the centre off your lip. That is the part most people get wrong: they trim the whole moustache evenly and never build the ends.

  • Month 1: a full chevron forms; trim only the centre where it touches the lip.
  • Month 2: the ends reach past the mouth corners; start combing them sideways every morning.
  • Month 3: enough length for a gentle upturn with wax.
  • Months 4 to 6: the ends can be twisted into a tight curl that holds all day.

Waxing and training the ends

Moustache wax is a firm, sticky mix usually built on beeswax, and it is what holds the curl in place. Firmer waxes hold better in summer humidity; softer ones are easier to work through the hair on a cold Ontario morning, when a hard wax can be almost impossible to spread.

Training is about repetition. If you shape the ends the same way every day, the hair starts to lie in that direction on its own, and you need less wax to get the same curl.

  1. Start with a clean, dry moustache; wax does not grip damp hair.
  2. Warm a rice-grain amount of wax between your thumb and forefinger until it softens.
  3. Work it through the moustache from the centre outward, then comb it through so every hair is coated.
  4. Part the moustache at the middle and comb each half out toward the side.
  5. Twist each end between your fingers in an upward direction, then roll it around a finger or a pencil to set the curl.
  6. Check both sides in the mirror and adjust the tighter curl to match the looser one, not the other way round.

Keeping the rest of your face tidy

A handlebar looks best with a clean frame around it. Most people either shave everything else or keep the cheeks and jaw at short stubble so the moustache stays the focus. A full beard with a handlebar is possible, but the beard must be kept short around the mouth or the curls disappear into it.

The skin just above the moustache and the corners around the mouth are where it gets messy first. We razor-line those areas and trim the centre lip line in a Beard Only + Lineup. If you are not ready for the full curl, the English moustache and other styles use shorter ends.

Mistakes that set a handlebar back

The expensive mistake is cutting the ends. One nervous trim when the moustache feels untidy at week six can cost a month of growth.

The other common one is using too much wax. It clumps, looks shiny and flakes white on dark hair. If you need a heavy coat to hold the curl, the ends are not long enough yet; give them more time rather than more product.

Handlebar mustache: common questions

Can I get a handlebar with a thin moustache?

Yes, as long as the ends grow long enough. Thin moustaches often curl more easily because there is less weight in each end.

How do I remove moustache wax at night?

Warm water and a small amount of face wash or beard wash will lift it. Comb it out afterward so the hair dries in the trained direction.

What haircut goes with a handlebar mustache?

Something with a classic feel keeps the look coherent, like a slick back or a short side part. It is a vintage style and looks strongest with a haircut from the same family.

Why does one side curl better than the other?

Most people have a slightly different growth direction on each side of the lip. Train the weaker side first each morning and use a touch more wax there.
