Full Beard vs Short Boxed Beard: Fullness, Structure and Face Shape
Short answer: A full beard is grown to 2 cm or more across the cheeks, jaw and chin, and its appeal is volume and a rugged, natural shape. A short boxed beard is kept at roughly 6 to 12 mm, with the sides tighter than the chin and sharp, squared lines, so its appeal is structure. The boxed beard takes about 3 to 5 weeks of growth and suits most offices; a full beard needs 4 to 8 weeks and more daily care.

Fullness versus structure
A full beard is judged by its mass and a short boxed beard by its lines. With a full beard, the barber's job is to control bulk: taking weight off the sides so the face does not look wide, rounding or squaring the bottom, and placing a neckline that keeps the volume under the jaw rather than down the throat.
With a short boxed beard, the length is short enough that shape comes from edges and graduation. The cheek line is set and razored, the corners at the jaw are squared off, the sides sit a guard or so shorter than the chin, and the whole thing looks deliberate and tight from every angle.
Which beard flatters which face
Both can suit almost anyone, but the proportions work differently on different faces. As a starting point:
- Round face: a short boxed beard with tight sides and a slightly longer, squared chin adds angles and length; a full beard works if the sides stay short and the length goes to the chin.
- Long or oblong face: a full beard with more fullness on the cheeks and a shorter chin adds width; avoid pushing length down, which makes the face longer.
- Square face with a strong jaw: a short boxed beard shows it off; a full beard can soften it if the corners are rounded.
- Soft or receding chin: extra length at the chin is the fix, which a full beard gives easily and a boxed beard can do with a little extra at the point.
- Heart-shaped face or narrow jaw: a full beard adds weight at the bottom and balances a wider forehead.
Full beard and short boxed beard compared
Growth rates vary a lot from person to person, so treat the timings as a typical range.

| Weeks of growth before first shape | 4 to 8 | 3 to 5 |
| Patchy growth | Length can cover gaps once it connects | Shows gaps more clearly |

Everyday life with each beard
A full beard is more work day to day but less fussy about precision. It needs washing a few times a week with a beard wash, oil or balm to keep the hair soft and the skin under it from flaking, and a brush to train the direction. Food and the Ontario winter both leave their mark: snow and wind dry it out, so balm matters more from December to March.
A boxed beard is the opposite. It is quick to care for but loses its shape fast, because at 1 cm a few millimetres of growth rounds off the corners and blurs the lines. If you like things neat, you will be picking up the trimmer weekly. Our beard oil versus beard balm comparison helps if you are choosing products for either.
Moving between the two
Going from a full beard to a boxed beard is one appointment. We take the length down with clipper guards, work the chin a little longer than the sides, then set new cheek and neck lines, since the full beard's lines usually sit in the wrong place for the shorter shape.
Going the other way means growing through. Stop trimming the length, keep the neckline clean, and come in around weeks four to six so we can shape the bulk before it goes wide. If it feels awkward mid-way, that is normal.

Full beard vs short boxed beard: common questions
Is a short boxed beard more professional than a full beard?
It tends to read as tidier, but a well-shaped full beard with clean lines is just as acceptable in most offices. Neglected edges are what look unprofessional.
Can I get a boxed beard if my cheeks are patchy?
Often, yes. Setting the cheek line a little lower removes the thinnest area and the tight length looks even; the patchy beard page has more options.
How long should I grow before choosing?
Give it about four weeks untouched except for the neck. By then you can see your density and where it connects, which usually makes the choice for you.
