Full Beard: Growing It In, Shaping the Bulk and Setting the Lines

Short answer: A full beard is facial hair grown across the cheeks, jaw, chin and upper lip, connected everywhere and left long enough to have real body, usually 2 cm or more. Most men need 4 to 8 weeks of growth before it looks full. A good one is shaped rather than just grown: bulk taken off the sides, a neckline set above the Adam's apple, and a cheek line that follows your natural growth.

How long a full beard takes to grow

Four to eight weeks is the realistic window for a full beard to cover evenly, and genetics decide where in that range you land. Beard hair grows at roughly a centimetre a month for most men, but the cheeks and the area under the lower lip usually fill in last.

The awkward stretch is weeks 2 to 4, when the hair is long enough to look untidy but too short to shape. Our beard growth stages page goes week by week. The short version: leave the length alone, but let us clean the neck and cheeks so it looks intentional while it fills in.

Shaping bulk is what separates full from messy

A full beard looks groomed when the sides are kept slimmer than the chin, and it looks unkempt when all areas are left the same length. Hair on the cheeks tends to grow outward and makes the face look wide; hair on the chin grows downward and adds useful length.

We remove weight from the sides with clipper-over-comb and scissors, working on a dry, brushed-out beard so we see how it actually falls. Then we round or square the bottom depending on face shape and blend the moustache into the rest.

  • Sides: taken in so the beard follows the jaw instead of puffing out.
  • Chin: left longest, shaped round, square or slightly tapered.
  • Moustache: trimmed clear of the lip and blended at the corners.
  • Under the jaw: thinned so the bottom does not look like a shelf.

Natural or set cheek line?

Keep a natural cheek line if your growth line is fairly high and even; set a defined line if it is wispy or uneven. A natural line gives a rugged, fuller look and grows out gracefully. A set line looks sharper in photos but needs cleaning every week or so.

The mistake to avoid is dropping the line well below where hair grows. It thins the beard visually and widens the upper face. Our guide to the beard cheek line compares natural, sharp and lowered versions with examples.

Placing the neckline

The neckline belongs just above the Adam's apple, roughly where your neck meets the underside of your jaw when you look straight ahead. From that centre point it curves back and up to just behind the angle of the jaw, under each ear.

Set it too high and the full beard looks like a chin strap from the side; set it too low and neck hair makes the whole beard look unkempt. On heavier necks we sit it a little higher, because the shadow under the line reads as a jaw. The details are on our beard neckline page.

Everyday care for a full beard

A full beard needs washing two or three times a week with a gentle beard wash, not daily scrubbing with a harsh shampoo, which strips the skin underneath. Oil or balm after a shower keeps the hair softer and the skin comfortable, particularly through dry Ontario winters when indoor heating and cold wind both pull moisture out.

Brush it downward every morning to train the direction of growth. Trim only stray hairs at home and leave the shaping to your barber until you know where your lines belong.

  1. Wash two or three times a week, rinse well, pat dry.
  2. Apply oil to the skin while the beard is slightly damp.
  3. Use balm on longer beards for light hold and to tame flyaways.
  4. Brush downward, then comb the moustache out to the sides.
  5. Snip any hair crossing the lip with small scissors.

When to see us

Book your first shape once you are past about four weeks, then every 3 to 4 weeks to keep the silhouette. If you want the fade on your head blended into the beard, Haircut + Beard handles both in one chair so the sideburns connect cleanly. For edges only between cuts, choose Beard Only + Lineup.

Full beard: common questions

Why does my full beard look wider than my face?

Side hair grows outward, so an unshaped beard adds width at the cheeks. Taking bulk off the sides and leaving length at the chin fixes the proportions.

Should I trim during the first month?

Trim only the neckline and stray cheek hairs. Cutting length early makes it harder to see where your beard is filling in; see how long to grow a beard before trimming.

Does a full beard suit every face shape?

Almost every face can wear one, but the shape changes: rounder faces want a longer, narrower chin; long faces want fuller sides and a shorter chin.

Does beard oil make a full beard grow faster?

No. Oil softens the hair and helps the skin, but growth rate and density are set by genetics and hormones.
