Beard Growth Stages: What Happens Week by Week

Short answer: Beard growth runs through five rough stages: stubble in week one, the itchy phase around weeks two and three, the awkward month from weeks four to six when lengths look uneven, the first real shape at around six to eight weeks, and a full beard from about three months. Book your first professional shape at six to eight weeks, and leave the cheek line and length alone at home until then.

The stages at a glance

Everyone's timeline is a little different, because beard growth depends on genetics, age and density, but most people follow a similar pattern. Facial hair grows about a centimetre a month on average, so these stages line up with the length you can expect.

Weeks 2 and 3: why it itches and what helps

The itch usually peaks in the second and third weeks, as the freshly cut hair tips grow out and the skin beneath gets drier under the new cover. It is almost always temporary and eases once the hair is long enough to soften.

Wash the beard with a gentle cleanser rather than harsh soap, pat it dry and start using a few drops of beard oil on the skin. Do not scratch hard or shave it off in frustration; that is exactly where most beards end. If the skin becomes painful, bumpy or inflamed, see a doctor or dermatologist, and read why a beard itches for more detail.

The awkward month, and what to leave alone

Between roughly week four and week six the beard looks its worst. Cheek hair grows at a different speed from chin hair, some areas curl outward, patches show and the neckline blurs into the throat.

This is the stage that tests patience, and the rule is to leave the shape alone. Trimming the cheeks or the length now just to make it look even usually removes the hair that would have filled the gaps later.

  • Leave alone: the cheek line, the overall length, the chin.
  • Fine to tidy: the neck well below where the neckline will sit, and the moustache where it touches the lip.
  • Worth doing: brushing every morning so hair starts growing in one direction.
  • Worth knowing: gaps that show now often close up by week eight; see our patchy beard page if they do not.

When to book the first shape

Book your first professional shape at around six to eight weeks, once there is enough length to see where your growth is dense and where the natural lines sit. Earlier than that, a barber has little to work with; much later and the beard spends extra weeks looking unkempt.

At that first visit we set a neckline, clean up the cheek line along your natural edge, trim the moustache off the lip and even out the bulk, while keeping as much length as possible. Book it as a Beard Only + Lineup and say you are still growing. The companion page on how long to grow a beard before trimming goes deeper on that decision.

Month three and beyond

By around three months most people have a full beard with enough length to choose a style: a full beard kept at 3 to 5 cm, a tighter boxed shape, or something longer. From here, the rhythm becomes a shape every few weeks with lineups in between.

If you plan to go longer, the next phase is about directing weight downward rather than outward. Our long beard guide picks up from roughly the six-month mark.

Beard growth stages: common questions

Does a beard ever stop growing?

Each hair has a growth phase that eventually ends, so most beards reach a natural maximum length that differs from person to person. For many people that is well past what they would actually want to wear.

Can I speed up the growth stages?

Not meaningfully. Sleep, diet and general health support normal growth, but no product reliably shortens the stages; see how to grow a beard faster.

Should I grow my beard out in winter?

Winter is a sensible time to start in Mississauga, partly because a scarf and toque hide the awkward weeks. Indoor heating dries skin, though, so oil becomes more important during the itchy stage.
