Hollywoodian Beard: The Jaw-Line Beard With No Sideburns

Short answer: A Hollywoodian beard is a beard that covers the chin and runs along the lower jaw, connected to a moustache, with the sideburns and upper cheeks shaved away so it does not reach the ears. It frames the mouth and chin like a full beard but stops short of the sideburn, which sharpens the jaw and keeps the face looking lean. It needs clean edges at the jaw ends and cheeks, reset every week or two.

Where a Hollywoodian starts and stops

A Hollywoodian is defined by where it ends: it follows the jawline back from the chin but stops before it climbs into the sideburns, usually somewhere below the back corner of the jaw or partway along it. The moustache connects down into the chin, and the upper cheeks are shaved clean.

Think of it as a full beard with the top third removed. Compared with an extended goatee, it carries more hair along the jaw and often lower cheek, so it looks fuller; compared with a Balbo, the moustache is connected rather than floating.

Why it strengthens the jaw

The Hollywoodian builds a strong jaw by drawing a hard horizontal line along it and then cutting that line off cleanly. The eye reads the edge as bone structure, while shaved cheeks above keep the face from looking heavy.

It works well on oval and long faces, where removing sideburn bulk stops the head looking narrow and tall, and on men whose cheeks grow in patchy while the jaw and chin are dense. On a very round face, keep the sides short and let the chin carry slightly more length so the shape lengthens rather than widens.

The lines that make it look intentional

Three edges decide whether a Hollywoodian looks sculpted or like a half-grown beard. Each one should be set deliberately, ideally with a razor finish.

  • The jaw ends: where the beard stops toward the ear. A clean, slightly angled cut-off reads sharper than a blunt vertical line.
  • The upper edge: from the jaw end forward to the moustache corner, usually a smooth line across the lower cheek. Keep it level on both sides.
  • The neckline: one to two finger-widths above the Adam's apple, curving back under the jaw. Our beard neckline guide shows how to find it.

How we cut a Hollywoodian

We start with the length, then build the lines from the chin outward so both sides match. Symmetry is checked from the front and in profile.

  1. Take the whole beard to an even base length, often a No. 3 or No. 4 guard, leaving the chin a touch longer.
  2. Decide with you where the beard should end on the jaw, looking at where your jaw angle sits.
  3. Clear the sideburns and upper cheeks with a trimmer, working down to the planned upper edge.
  4. Shape the jaw ends and the upper line, then match the second side to the first.
  5. Set the neckline and clean everything below it.
  6. Finish all the edges with a razor and a hot towel so the contrast is crisp.

Keeping the edges sharp at home

The shaved zones grow back fast, so the Hollywoodian needs the upper cheeks and sideburn area cleaned every two or three days. A foil shaver or a trimmer with no guard is quicker and gentler than a daily razor for most people.

Leave the jaw-end cut-off and the upper line alone at home, and only remove hair clearly outside them. Moving the edges yourself is the fastest way to lose symmetry. A reset every one to two weeks keeps the shape where it was designed; our journal post on keeping your beard sharp between visits covers the home routine.

Hollywoodian beard: common questions

Why is it called a Hollywoodian?

The name is linked to the style's popularity with actors and on-screen characters, but there is no single well-documented origin, so we would not lean on any particular story.

Does a Hollywoodian work with a fade?

Yes, and it pairs well with a skin or mid fade, since there are no sideburns to blend. The shaved area between the fade and the jaw end just needs to look clean.

Can I grow a Hollywoodian with patchy cheeks?

Often, yes. It removes the upper cheeks and sideburns where most patchiness sits, as long as your jaw and chin fill in.

How long should a Hollywoodian be?

Most look sharpest between about 6 mm and 2 cm. Longer versions work but lose some of the crisp jaw definition.
