Soul Patch: Size, Pairings and Keeping It Deliberate

Short answer: A soul patch is a small patch of hair grown just below the lower lip and above the chin, with the rest of the face shaved or kept as short stubble. It is usually about as wide as the middle third of your lower lip, and kept short so it looks sculpted. On its own it is a bold, minimalist choice; paired with stubble or a moustache it reads more relaxed. Crisp edges are what stop it looking like a missed spot.

Getting the size right

A soul patch should be sized to your mouth, not left to whatever grows there. Most sit roughly centred under the lower lip, somewhere between about 1 and 3 cm wide, and stop well above the point of the chin.

Shape is the next choice. A small rectangle or rounded square reads neat and modern; a narrow vertical strip draws the eye downward and suits round faces; a downward-pointing triangle is the classic version. Anything much bigger than the width of your lower lip begins to look like a chin-only goatee rather than a soul patch.

Pairing it with stubble, a moustache or nothing

A soul patch changes character depending on what surrounds it. Alone on a clean-shaven face, it is the whole statement and needs to be perfectly shaped. With light stubble around it, it softens and looks more casual.

Pairing it with a moustache that does not connect gives you a shape close to a Van Dyke with a very small chin piece, and it is also the link that joins the parts of a Balbo. Our moustache styles guide covers which moustaches work best when you want the patch to stay the smaller partner.

  • Clean-shaven plus soul patch: sharpest, highest upkeep.
  • Stubble at a No. 1 plus a patch left slightly longer: relaxed, easy to live with.
  • Pencil or chevron moustache plus patch: a styled, slightly retro look.
  • Patch plus chin beard, no moustache: heavier, closer to a goatee.

Keeping it deliberate, not missed

The biggest risk with a soul patch is that people read it as a spot you forgot to shave. Three things prevent that: sharp edges, a length that is clearly longer than the surrounding skin, and symmetry around the centre of your lip.

Keep the patch trimmed to a steady length, often between 3 and 10 mm, and shave the skin around it every day or two if you wear it on its own. If your lower-lip hair grows in unevenly, a narrower shape centred on the thickest growth usually looks more intentional than a wide, thin one.

How to trim a soul patch at home

A detail trimmer and a mirror at eye level are enough. Work in small movements and check straight on after each pass.

  1. Trim the patch to length with a guard, or comb it down and cut across with small scissors.
  2. Stretch your lower lip down slightly by pushing your tongue behind it, which gives a flat surface to work on.
  3. Mark the width by lining up the edges with a fixed point, such as the edges of your nostrils or a set distance inside the mouth corners.
  4. Shave or trim the outside edges, matching the second side to the first.
  5. Set the bottom edge in a clean horizontal or angled line, well above the chin point.
  6. Rinse and apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to the shaved skin.

What a barber adds

A barber sets the outline with a razor so the shape stays crisp longer and both sides match. During a Beard Only + Lineup we map the patch to your mouth and chin, clean the rest of the face and finish with a hot towel.

If you want to try one without committing, grow a light beard for a week and let us carve the patch from it. You will see how it looks on your face before shaving the rest.

Soul patch: common questions

Is a soul patch the same as a mouche?

They are closely related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. Mouche sometimes refers to a particularly small, neat patch.

Do soul patches suit round faces?

Yes, if they are narrow and slightly vertical. A tall, slim patch draws the eye downward rather than across.

How long does it take to grow a soul patch?

Usually one to three weeks to have enough length to shape, depending on how thick your lower-lip hair grows.

Can I wear a soul patch at work?

A small, neat one is fine in many workplaces. Keeping the surrounding skin clean shaven makes it look most professional.
