Garibaldi Beard: Growing and Shaping a Wide, Round-Bottomed Beard

Short answer: A Garibaldi beard is a wide, full beard with a rounded bottom and a natural moustache blended into it, usually grown to around 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches). It is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, the 19th-century general of Italian unification. It takes roughly 6 months or more of growth, and its look depends on keeping the bottom rounded and the moustache clear of the lip rather than on sharp edges.

What defines a Garibaldi

Three features define the Garibaldi: real length, genuine width and a rounded bottom. It is broader than most long beards, with the sides kept full rather than slimmed, and the base curves like the bottom of a U instead of tapering to a point.

The moustache is part of the beard rather than a separate feature; it is allowed to grow and blend in, trimmed only enough to keep the lip clear. The style takes its name from Giuseppe Garibaldi, whose full, rounded beard appears in nearly every portrait of him. It sits one step beyond a full beard in length and commitment, and a step short of an untamed long beard.

The growth timeline, month by month

Plan on six months at the minimum, and longer if your beard grows slowly or you want the upper end of the length range. The key is to shape in stages instead of waiting to cut it all at once.

StageWhat to do
Month 1Let it grow; keep the neck and cheeks tidy only
Months 2 to 3First professional shape; start rounding the bottom lightly
Months 3 to 5Keep the sides full; trim only to even out the curve
Month 6 onwardRefine the round bottom and width; maintain every few weeks

How we shape the round bottom

The rounded base is cut on a dry, brushed-out beard so we see its true length and how it falls. Wet beard hair hangs longer and straighter, and cutting it wet is how Garibaldis end up shorter and lopsided once dry.

We comb the beard straight down, find the centre, and cut a gentle arc with scissors, taking the corners up slightly more than the middle so the curve looks natural. Then we check from both profiles, because a round bottom can look even from the front and still slope toward one shoulder.

  1. Wash, dry and brush the beard fully straight.
  2. Pick the centre length and hold it with a comb.
  3. Cut outward from centre on each side in a shallow curve.
  4. Blend the sides into the arc so there is no step at the jaw corner.
  5. Detail the moustache and check the profile.

Width without the mess

A Garibaldi should be wide, but the width has to look deliberate. The cheek line stays natural and the neckline sits roughly where it would on a shorter beard, then the length falls over it.

Stray hairs that poke out beyond the silhouette are what make a big beard look unkempt. Scissor-trimming those every week or two, and using a balm to set the outer layer, keeps the outline smooth. Our guide to beard balm covers working it through long hair.

Daily care at this length

At 15 cm or more, the hair at the bottom of your beard is months old, so it gets drier and more brittle than the new growth near the skin. The care routine shifts toward conditioning and gentle handling.

  • Wash two or three times a week and always follow with a beard conditioner.
  • Use a few extra drops of oil, working it into the skin and down to the ends.
  • Detangle with a wide-tooth comb from the bottom up, then a boar-bristle brush.
  • Keep the moustache trimmed clear of the lip; at this length it will otherwise end up in every drink.
  • In Ontario winters, a scarf or a pulled-up collar can flatten and dry the beard, so give the ends extra oil.

Booking shaping appointments

Book a shape every 4 to 8 weeks once the beard has length. If you keep your hair short, Haircut + Beard lets us connect the sideburns and match the weight of the haircut to the beard, which matters with a beard this big. Between cuts, choose Beard Only + Lineup.

Garibaldi beard: common questions

How is a Garibaldi different from a Verdi?

A Garibaldi is longer and wider with a moustache that blends into the beard. A Verdi beard is shorter and features a styled moustache kept distinct from it.

Can I grow a Garibaldi if my beard is patchy?

Length hides a lot, so patchy cheeks are often covered by the time the beard reaches 10 cm or more. Very sparse growth may still show through.

Should I trim a Garibaldi at home?

Only stray hairs and the lip line. Cutting the curve yourself is the fastest way to lose months of length, so leave it to your barber.

Does a Garibaldi suit a round face?

It can, as long as the bottom is kept longer than the sides are wide. A ducktail beard is a better choice if you want the most slimming effect.
