Should You Cancel a Haircut When Sick? Yes, If You Could Pass It On

Short answer: Yes, cancel or reschedule your haircut if you have anything that could spread: a fever, a cough, a runny nose, a sore throat or a stomach bug. A haircut puts your face within arm's length of the barber for the whole service, and the next client sits in the same chair. Message the shop as early as you can, rebook for when you feel well, and nobody will think less of you.

Why a haircut is a close-contact appointment

A haircut is one of the few services where someone leans over your face and breathes the same air as you, closely, for the whole appointment. A barber lining up your hairline or shaping your moustache is centimetres from your nose and mouth, and you cannot turn away to cough without risking the razor.

Public health advice in Canada is simple on this point: staying home when you are sick is one of the main ways to reduce the spread of flu. That applies to a barber chair as much as an office. A barber who catches a bug from one client can end up cancelling a full day of other people.

A quick check: cancel, or go ahead?

Use how you feel today, not how you hope to feel by the appointment. If you are unsure, err toward rescheduling; a haircut can nearly always wait a few days, and the cut will be better if you can sit comfortably through it.

How you feelWhat to do
Fever, chills or body achesCancel and rebook once you are well
New cough, sneezing or runny noseCancel; a sneeze mid-lineup is a hazard as well as a courtesy issue
Vomiting or diarrhoeaCancel and wait until you have been well for a while
Pink eye or a cold soreReschedule; both spread by close contact
Lingering dry cough after recoveryTell the shop and ask; many will still see you
Seasonal allergies you know wellUsually fine to go; bring tissues and mention it

How to reschedule without fuss

Reschedule the same way you booked, and do it the moment you decide you are not going. At Markcutit you can change the appointment in Booksy, or call or text (647) 221-9795; a short message is all it takes.

Something like "Woke up with a fever, don't want to pass it on. Can we move my Thursday cut to next week?" is perfect. It tells the barber why, and it gives them a chance to offer your time to someone else. If you are too unwell to think about dates, cancel now and book again on Booksy once you are back on your feet.

Skin and scalp problems your barber needs to know about

Some conditions are not a cold but still matter at the chair. Anything contagious on the scalp, face or neck, such as ringworm of the scalp, impetigo, a shingles rash or head lice, is a reason to postpone until it has been treated and a doctor says it is no longer spreading.

Non-contagious conditions are different. Dandruff, psoriasis, eczema and razor bumps are not catching, and a barber can usually work around them if you mention them first. If you are not sure whether a rash or patch is contagious, have it looked at by a doctor or dermatologist before the appointment rather than asking the barber to judge.

  • Postpone: suspected ringworm, impetigo, lice, an active shingles rash, open infected spots.
  • Mention, then go ahead: dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, razor bumps, a healing nick.
  • Ask a doctor first: any new rash, spreading redness or patch you cannot identify.

Coming back after being ill

Book again once you have no fever and the worst of the symptoms have passed, so you can sit still without coughing through a fade. A few extra days of growth rarely hurts; if anything, the barber has a little more length to work with.

If you had a big event planned around that cut, look at the guide on timing a haircut before a big event to work out the latest sensible day. Same-day openings often exist, so a late recovery does not necessarily mean going to the wedding shaggy.

What if you feel ill during the appointment?

Say so straight away. If you feel faint, feverish or nauseous in the chair, the barber would much rather pause, get you some water and finish the essentials than have you push through. Feeling light-headed under a warm cape is common enough that nobody will be surprised.

A barber can usually tidy an unfinished cut into something wearable in a few minutes, and you can come back for the detail work later. Honesty on the day is part of basic barbershop etiquette, and it protects both of you.

Should you cancel a haircut when sick: common questions

Is it rude to cancel a haircut last minute because I'm sick?

No. A barber would much rather lose a slot than catch a cold that takes out several days of appointments. Just let them know as soon as you realise.

Can I get a haircut with a cold if I wear a mask?

A mask helps, but it gets in the way of work around the ears, sideburns and beard, and it does not stop sneezing fits. If you are actively sick, rescheduling is still the better choice.

Can I go to the barber with dandruff?

Yes. Dandruff is not contagious. Mention it at the start so the barber can take it into account, and see a dermatologist if it is severe or does not respond to medicated shampoo.

What if my child or partner at home is sick but I feel fine?

Use your judgement and be open with the shop. Telling them lets the barber decide, and many people simply move the appointment by a few days to be safe.
