Mid Drop Fade: A Marcel Shabo Cut With a Short Crop and Beard

Short answer: A mid drop fade is a fade whose line sits around the middle of the side of the head and then curves down behind the ear toward the nape. In this Marcel Shabo result it sits under a short crop pushed forward and a full beard. It suits anyone who wants a skin fade that follows the shape of the head instead of cutting straight across it.

Where the drop happens in this photo

The drop is visible behind the ear. In front, the fade line sits fairly high, around the temple, but as it passes over the ear it curves downward and follows the back of the skull toward the neck.

Everything below that curve is taken to skin, including the area around and behind the ear. The result is a fade that looks like an arc from the side rather than a flat band, which is the whole point of asking for a drop.

The top and the beard

The top is a short crop, a few centimetres long, combed forward so the front forms a short, slightly broken fringe at the hairline. The texture is soft and straight, with a little piecey separation at the ends.

The beard is full, covering the cheek, jaw and chin, and it has more length at the chin. The sideburn is faded where it meets the haircut, and the beard continues under the jaw without a sharply cut neckline visible in the photo.

How Marcel builds a drop fade

Marcel leans toward drop fades, and the technique depends on setting the curve before blending. If the guideline is flat, the blend will be flat too.

  1. Draw the guideline at mid height in front of the ear.
  2. Curve it down behind the ear, following the occipital bone toward the nape.
  3. Take everything below the line to skin, then blend upward with shorter strokes behind the ear.
  4. Crop the top forward with scissors or clipper-over-comb and break up the fringe.
  5. Fade the sideburn into the beard and tidy the cheek line.

Who a mid drop fade suits

It suits people with a rounded back of the head, because the drop follows that curve and makes it look neater. It also suits short crops and French crop-style fringes, where the forward top pairs well with a fade that rises at the front.

Our drop fade guide covers low, mid and high drops, and the French crop guide explains the forward fringe.

How it grows out and when to return

Behind the ear is where a drop fade loses its shape first, as the skin area fills in and the curve blurs. Most people rebook every 2 to 3 weeks to keep the arc visible.

At home, a little matte product pushed forward with the fingertips keeps the crop from lying flat. If you want a sharper beard neckline next time, mention it at the consultation.

Mid drop fade: common questions

What is the difference between a mid fade and a mid drop fade?

A mid fade keeps the line level all the way round; a mid drop fade lowers it behind the ear so it curves down toward the nape.

Can I book Marcel for a drop fade in Mississauga?

Yes. Pick Marcel on Booksy; the drop fade page for Mississauga covers the appointment.

Will a drop fade still connect to a full beard?

Yes. The fade rises at the front, which leaves room to blend the sideburn into the beard.
