How Often Should You Trim Your Beard? A Schedule by Length and Style
Short answer: How often you should trim your beard depends on its length. Stubble needs trimming every two to four days to stay at the same length, short boxed beards about once a week, and medium to long beards every two to four weeks with a barber shaping them. Lines on the cheeks and neck blur fastest, so most men book a lineup more often than a full reshape.

The shorter the beard, the more often you trim
Facial hair grows steadily every day, but a millimetre matters much more on stubble than on a 5 cm beard. A 3 mm stubble doubles in length in a few days, while a full beard barely changes in the same period.
So stubble is a high-frequency, home-trimmer job, and long beards are a low-frequency, barber job. Most beards sit somewhere in between.
Your own growth rate and density shift the numbers too. Dense, dark beards show a day of growth more than lighter or finer ones, and some men find the moustache and chin outpace the cheeks by a wide margin. Watch your beard for a couple of weeks after a trim and you will quickly learn your own rhythm.
A trimming schedule for every beard length
Use this table as a baseline and adjust for how quickly your beard grows and how sharp you like it.
| Beard | Length | Trim at home | Barber visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stubble | 1 to 5 mm | Every 2 to 4 days with a guarded trimmer | Every 2 to 3 weeks for lines |
| Short boxed | 6 to 15 mm | Weekly tidy of strays and moustache | Every 2 to 3 weeks |
| Medium full beard | 2 to 5 cm | Moustache and strays only | Every 3 to 4 weeks |
| Long beard | Over 5 cm | Moustache only | Every 4 to 6 weeks |
| Goatee or styled shapes | Varies | Every few days to hold edges | Every 2 weeks |
Lines and length are two different jobs
Trimming length and cleaning lines follow different clocks. Length can wait weeks; a cheek line or neckline starts to look soft within four or five days because it sits right on the skin.
That is why many regulars alternate: a full shape with every haircut through our Haircut + Beard service, and a quick Beard Only + Lineup in between. If you want to maintain lines yourself, the journal has a guide to keeping your beard sharp between visits.
Signs your beard is overdue
You do not need a calendar if you know what to look for. Any of these means it is time.
- The moustache touches your top lip or gets into food and drinks.
- The neckline has crept down onto your throat and the jaw looks softer.
- Hair on the cheeks is growing above the line you had set.
- The beard looks wider at the sides than at the chin, making the face look rounder.
- Split, wiry ends stick out no matter how you brush it.
Trimming while growing a longer beard
If you are growing for length, trim less, not more. Keep the moustache and neckline clean and let everything else grow for the first four to six weeks, then have a barber set the shape.
After that, a shaping visit every month or so removes bulk where it grows unevenly without costing overall length. See how long to grow a beard before trimming for the early weeks.
Longer beards also benefit from gentle care between shapes: a daily brush, a little oil or balm, and washing with a mild cleanser. That keeps split ends and frizz down, so each barber visit can focus on shape instead of damage control. For styles in this range, see the full beard and long beard guides.
What happens at a barber beard trim
A professional trim does more than cut length. We set a neckline just above the Adam's apple, shape the cheek line to suit your face, even out the bulk, trim the moustache clear of the lip and finish the edges with a razor.
Every Beard Only + Lineup at Markcutit also includes a hot towel, a hair wash and a head massage. For the full breakdown, read what a beard trim includes.
How often should you trim your beard: common questions
Should I trim my beard wet or dry?
Dry. Beard hair looks longer and straighter when wet, so trimming it wet usually takes off more than you meant once it dries.
Is it bad to trim my beard every day?
For stubble it is fine. For longer beards it tends to cause over-trimming and uneven shape, so limit daily work to stray hairs.
How often should I trim my moustache?
Every few days to once a week, depending on how fast it grows. Keep it clear of the lip line even if the rest of the beard is growing.
Do I need a different trimmer for stubble?
A trimmer with adjustable guards in 0.5 or 1 mm steps makes stubble much easier to keep even. Pick one length that suits you and use it on the whole beard every few days.
