Do Haircuts Make Hair Grow Faster? The Myth and What Trims Really Do

Short answer: No. Haircuts do not make hair grow faster, because growth happens in the follicle under the scalp and scissors only touch the dead shaft above it. What regular trims do is remove split and frayed ends before they travel further up the hair, so the length you keep looks thicker and healthier. Trims protect length; they do not create it.

Growth happens at the root, not at the ends

Every hair is produced by a follicle sitting in the skin, and the visible strand is made of keratin that is no longer alive. Cutting the tip is like trimming a fingernail: the nail bed keeps working at its own pace no matter how often you file the edge.

So a cut every two weeks and a cut every six months lead to the same growth rate. The difference is in what the ends look like when you get there.

Why the myth feels true

The belief survives because a fresh cut changes how growth looks. A few reasons people are convinced their hair shot up after a visit:

  • A blunt, even perimeter makes new length obvious sooner than a ragged one does.
  • Removing bulk lets hair lie flatter and fall longer, especially with waves or curls.
  • Short sides and back show regrowth within days, so a fade feels like it grows twice as fast as a longer top.
  • Healthy ends reflect light better, so the whole head reads as thicker.

What regular trims actually do for long hair

Trims stop damage from spreading. A split end can keep splitting upward along the strand, and by the time it is obvious you often have to take off more than you would have with a small, regular dusting.

For men growing to shoulder length or longer, that means a trim is an investment in keeping length, not losing it. We usually take off just the frayed centimetre or less, clean up the shape around the ears and neck, and leave the rest alone. If you want to know how we handle that kind of appointment, see whether barbers cut long hair.

How often to trim when you are growing it out

Every eight to twelve weeks is a reasonable rhythm for a grow-out, which is much less often than a maintained short cut. The point of each visit is shape and end health, not length.

  1. Tell your barber at the start that you are growing it out and want to lose as little length as possible.
  2. Let them take off only the damaged ends, usually a few millimetres, rather than an even centimetre everywhere.
  3. Ask for the sides and neckline to be tidied so the awkward stages look intentional.
  4. Rebook based on how the ends feel: rough, tangly tips are the sign it is time.

What does help hair grow well?

Healthy growth comes from a healthy scalp and body, not from the scissors. Eating enough protein and iron, managing stress, and treating an itchy or flaky scalp all support the hair you already have.

Gentle habits protect the length on the way down: less high heat, no rough towel-drying, a wide-tooth comb on wet hair, and conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. Our guide on whether men need conditioner goes into detail.

If you are shedding far more than usual or notice bald patches, skip the supplements aisle and speak to a doctor or dermatologist, since sudden change usually has a cause worth finding.

Scissor trims versus clipper cuts for a grow-out

A grow-out trim is almost always a scissor job, because the aim is to remove as little as possible with control strand by strand. Clippers are ideal for a fade or taper at the sides, but they take off a set length everywhere they touch.

We often combine the two: scissors for the length you are protecting and a tidy clipper edge at the neck so it still looks cared for. That work is booked as a Haircut Only through our scissor cuts service.

Do haircuts make hair grow faster: common questions

Will shaving my head make my hair grow back thicker?

No, for the same reason: the follicle is untouched. Stubble just feels coarser because the tips are blunt, which we explain on does shaving make hair grow back thicker.

Do trims make hair grow faster on the full moon?

No. That is folklore. Follicles run on their own biological cycle and do not respond to the calendar or the moon.

Can I skip trims completely while growing my hair?

You can, and the hair will still grow, but the ends may split and tangle more. A small trim every couple of months keeps the length looking full.

How much should a grow-out trim take off?

Usually just the frayed tips, often well under a centimetre. Say the words "dust the ends only" so there is no confusion.
