Haircuts for a Flat Back of the Head: Building a Rounder Profile
Short answer: Haircuts for a flat back of the head work by leaving weight at the crown and upper back so the profile looks rounded. A low taper, a drop fade that dips behind the ear, or scissor-cut sides with 2 to 4 centimetres at the occipital area all build curve where the skull has none. High fades and one-length buzz cuts expose the flat spot because they strip the hair that was filling it in.

Where the flatness actually is
A flat back of the head means the occipital bone, the bump most people feel at the back of the skull, is shallow or absent, so the head drops almost straight down from crown to neck. From the side, the profile looks more like a vertical line than a curve.
It is very common and completely harmless. Sleeping position as a baby, genetics and simple variation all play a part. The only reason it matters in a barbershop is that a fade placed in the wrong spot makes it more obvious, while a fade placed correctly hides it almost entirely.
How weight at the crown rebuilds the curve
Leaving longer hair across the crown and the upper back fills the space where a rounder skull would bulge. Think of the hair as padding: 2 to 4 centimetres over the flattest part creates a gentle curve that the bone does not.
The key is where the shortest hair stops. We keep the tight part of any fade below the flat area, usually at or under the level of the ear tips at the back, and then let the length build quickly above it. That way the transition itself creates the curve.
Drop fades and low tapers: the best choices
A drop fade and a low taper are the two fades that suit a flat back best, because both keep the short section low at the back.
- Drop fade: the fade line curves down behind the ear and stays low across the nape, so more length is left over the occipital area. It gives the back of the head a visible arc.
- Low taper: only the sideburns and nape are taken short. The rest of the back stays at scissor length or a No. 4 and above, which hides flatness completely.
- Scissor-cut back: no clippers above the hairline at all. Best if you wear medium length.
- Burst fade: the curve around the ear leaves the whole back long, which works well with curly or textured tops.
What fades expose a flat back
High fades, high and tights and short buzz cuts expose a flat back because they take the back down to skin or near-skin right up to the crown. Without hair over the occipital area, the head's straight profile is all there is to see.
A mid fade can work if the barber drops it at the back, keeping the blend high at the temples and low behind. Ask for that specifically, because a mid fade cut level all the way around will sit right at the flattest point.
| Fade | Where the short hair ends at the back | On a flat back |
|---|---|---|
| High fade | Near the crown | Exposes the flat area |
| Mid fade, level | Across the flattest point | Draws a line on the flat spot |
| Mid fade, dropped | Below the flat area behind | Works well |
| Low taper or drop fade | At the nape | Best coverage |
How we check your profile in the chair
During the consultation we look at your head from the side as well as the back, because flatness is only visible in profile. Sometimes we run a hand over the back of the head to find where the curve drops off before deciding where the fade stops.
Marcel Shabo cuts a lot of drop fades and detailed tapers, so if a flat back is your main concern, booking with Marcel is a good fit. At the end, we hold up the hand mirror at a side angle, not just straight behind, so you can see the profile.
Keeping the shape as it grows
A cut that hides a flat back holds up for about 3 to 5 weeks, because the extra length at the crown keeps working as it grows. What changes first is the nape, which gets fuzzy and makes the back look heavy at the bottom rather than round in the middle.
Style the back too, not just the front. A little texture product rubbed into the crown with your fingertips lifts the hair there, which adds more curve than flat, combed-down hair.
Haircuts for a flat back of the head: common questions
Can I still get a skin fade with a flat back of the head?
Yes, as long as it is a low skin fade or dropped at the back. Keep plenty of length above the fade, and see our skin fades for how we blend them.
Does longer hair on top help a flat back?
Only if some of that length continues into the crown. A long top with a high fade still leaves the back bare, so the flat area shows.
Is a flat back of the head a medical problem in adults?
For most adults it is simply head shape. If you notice a change in the shape of your skull, see a doctor.
