Haircuts for Scalp Scars: Covering Them or Showing Them Off
Short answer: To cover a scalp scar, keep the hair over it at least 1.5 to 2 centimetres long and set any fade below it, so the surrounding hair lies across the scar. A low taper, a side part or a textured crop usually hides scars on the sides or crown. To show a scar, go the other way: a clean skin fade or a short buzz makes it look deliberate. Scar tissue often grows little or no hair, so plan the cut around that.

Decide first: cover it or wear it
The first choice is whether you want the scar hidden or visible, because the two approaches need opposite cuts. Neither is wrong, and plenty of men switch between them depending on the season or the job.
Covering means keeping length over and around the scar and making sure the part, fade line and cowlicks do not point toward it. Wearing it means taking the surrounding hair short enough that the scar looks like part of the design rather than something peeking through.
How hair grows around a scar
Hair usually grows sparsely or not at all in scar tissue, because the follicles in that spot were damaged or replaced as the skin healed. The hair around the edge of a scar can also grow in at a slightly different angle, which is why some scars look like a parting that will not close.
This shapes the haircut. A scar with no hair in it is effectively a small bald line, so any length that covers it has to come from the neighbouring hair lying over it. That means we pay attention to growth direction and cut so the longer hair falls toward and across the scar.
Covering a scar by location
The right coverage depends mostly on where the scar is. The table below is where we would usually start.
| Scar location | Cover with | Fade height |
|---|---|---|
| Top of the head | Textured top, 4 cm or more, styled across the scar | Any |
| Crown | Leave 3 to 5 cm; avoid a whorl pointing at the scar | Low or mid |
| Side above the ear | Scissor-cut sides or a No. 4 and up over the scar | Low taper below it |
| Behind the ear or nape | Low taper that starts under the scar, or a longer neckline | Very low |
| Along the hairline | A fringe or textured front pushed forward | Any |
Making a scar look intentional
A scar looks intentional when the hair around it is short and crisp enough that it reads as a clean line. A mid or high skin fade through the side takes the hair down to skin, and a straight scar there can look almost like a hard part.
The finish matters. A razor-clean lineup and sharp edges around the rest of the cut signal that everything on the head is deliberate. A scar with a fuzzy outline next to it can look accidental; the same scar next to crisp edges looks like part of the style.
Scars that run vertically, from the crown down toward the ear, suit this treatment especially well, because a fade already creates vertical movement through the side. A scar that crosses the head horizontally tends to read as a second fade line, so it is usually better covered.
Recent scars and surgery sites
Wait until a surgical or injury scar has fully healed and your doctor or surgeon is happy for clippers to go near it before booking a haircut. Fresh scar tissue is fragile, and clipper blades or a lineup should never be run over an incision that is still closing.
Tell us about the scar before we start, even if it is old. We switch to a guard or scissors over raised or sensitive scar tissue instead of running a bare blade across it. If a scar becomes painful, itchy, raised or changes in colour, show it to a doctor or dermatologist.
What to say at the start of the appointment
Point to the scar and say whether you want it covered or shown. That one sentence changes where the fade sits, which guards we use and how we cut the surrounding hair.
It also helps to mention if the scar is tender or if you have had any hair loss around it. Our consultation, which you can read about in what happens in a barber consultation, is the moment for it.
Haircuts for scalp scars: common questions
Will hair grow back over my scalp scar?
Often not fully, since scar tissue tends to have few working hair follicles. A dermatologist can advise whether any treatment is an option for your scar.
Can a barber shave a design around a scar?
We do not cut hair designs, but a skin fade and a sharp lineup can make a scar look intentional without any extra lines.
What if my scar is on the crown and I am thinning there too?
Keep the top short and even rather than long, so the scar and the thinning are less obvious together. Our guide to haircuts for a thinning crown covers this.
