Should You Tip a Barber Who Owns the Shop?

Short answer: Yes. In Canada today it is normal to tip a barber who owns the shop at the same rate you would tip anyone else, commonly 15 to 20 percent. The old etiquette that owners should not be tipped dates from when an owner kept the whole service price, which is no longer how most shops work. The only real exception is an owner who clearly says they do not take tips.

Where the no-tipping-the-owner rule came from

The rule is an old etiquette-book idea based on who got paid. Decades ago, a shop owner set the prices, cut hair and kept the full fee, while the employed barbers beside them earned a smaller share. Tipping existed to top up the employees, so tipping the person who already took home the whole price seemed odd, even slightly insulting.

Plenty of older Canadians still remember being taught this, and some advice columns repeat it without checking whether it still fits. It made sense in that setting. The trouble is that the setting has changed.

Why the custom has shifted in Canada

Most people now tip an owner because the owner's income no longer looks the way the old rule assumed. Here is what changed:

  • Rent, insurance, equipment, card processing fees and supplies come out of the service price before an owner sees any of it, so the fee is not the same as their pay.
  • Many barbers who call a shop theirs actually rent a chair or suite and run a one-person business, which puts them in exactly the same position as any self-employed barber.
  • Card terminals and booking apps prompt for a tip on every service, and most clients do not know or check who owns the business.
  • Owners usually handle scheduling, messages, cleaning and training after their last client leaves, so their hourly earnings are rarely higher than a staff barber's.
  • A tip thanks the person for the haircut you received, not for their position in the business.

How much to tip an owner

Tip an owner the same way you would tip any barber: roughly 15 to 20 percent, with a bit more for a detailed fade or a same-day favour. Our main guide on how much to tip a barber in Canada goes through the details, including holiday tips and app versus cash.

There is no special owner rate, higher or lower. Some people feel they should tip less because the owner "already gets the money", and some feel they should tip more because the owner is the most senior barber. Neither is expected. Tip for the quality of the work and the experience you had.

When not tipping the owner is fine

Skipping the tip is fine when the owner has told you they do not accept tips, or a sign at the counter says so. Some owners still follow the old custom themselves, and pushing money on them can be awkward. Respect it.

If an owner refuses a tip, there are other ways to say thank you that genuinely help a small shop:

  1. Book your next appointment before you leave, so their calendar fills in advance.
  2. Leave an honest Google review that mentions what they did well.
  3. Tag their work if you post a photo of your cut on Instagram.
  4. Recommend them to a friend who has been looking for a new barber.

How it works at Markcutit

At Markcutit, Mark Yousif founded the shop and is still behind the chair as a senior barber, working alongside Marcel Shabo. The way you tip does not change with who cuts your hair: you can tip however the shop accepts payment, and cash in person always works. Nobody at the chair expects you to know the business structure before deciding.

If you are new to us or to barbershops in general, our page on your first time at a barbershop explains what happens from check-in to payment, and you can see who cuts what on our barbers page.

Should you tip a barber who owns the shop: common questions

Is it rude to tip the owner of a barbershop?

Not in Canada today. Owners who do not want tips will usually tell you so politely, and nobody is offended by the offer.

How do I know if my barber owns the shop?

You often cannot tell, and you do not need to. Tip based on the service; if the owner prefers not to be tipped, they will let you know.

Do you tip a barber who rents a chair?

Yes. A chair-renting barber runs their own small business and pays for the space out of the service price, so tipping works just as it does for anyone else.

Should I tip the owner if they also did my beard?

Yes, tip on the whole service. A haircut plus beard shaping takes more work than either alone, so tipping toward the top of the usual range is common.
