How Long Does a Buzz Cut Take to Grow Out? A Month-by-Month Guide
Short answer: A buzz cut takes about four to six months to grow out into a short, styleable cut with a real top, and about a year to reach a medium length you can push back. Hair grows roughly 1 to 1.25 centimetres a month, so the starting guard only changes the timeline by a few weeks. Light shaping trims on the sides and neck keep the in-between stages looking deliberate.

Your starting guard matters less than you think
The guard number you start from shifts the timeline by weeks, not months. A number 1 leaves about 3 millimetres, a number 2 about 6 and a number 4 about 13, so even the longest buzz is only about a month's growth ahead of the shortest. What really decides how long the grow-out feels is where you want to end up.
The table gives a rough length for the top at each point, assuming average growth and no length taken off the top along the way. Your own rate may be faster or slower; genes, age and health all play a part, as our page on how fast hair grows explains.
| Time since the buzz | From a number 1 (3 mm) | From a number 4 (13 mm) | What you can wear |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | About 1.5 cm | About 2.5 cm | A longer buzz or a very short crew cut |
| 2 months | About 2.5 cm | About 3.5 cm | Crew cut or short textured crop |
| 4 months | About 5 cm | About 6 cm | Textured top, short quiff, side part |
| 6 months | About 7.5 cm | About 8.5 cm | Brushed back, short slick back, loose fringe |
| 12 months | About 15 cm | About 16 cm | Medium length, the start of a flow |
The awkward stages, and when they happen
Most people hit two awkward points on the way out of a buzz. The first comes around weeks 6 to 10, when the hair is long enough to stick up and fan out but too short to style. The crown is usually the worst area, because whorls push hair outward before it has the weight to lie down.
The second arrives around months 3 to 5, when the sides start to puff out over the ears and the back creeps over the collar. This is where most grow-outs are abandoned, not because the top is wrong but because the sides and neckline have gone shapeless. A short visit to fix just the edges solves most of it.
How shaping trims speed things up without cutting length
A shaping trim takes the sides and back down slightly while leaving the top completely alone, which makes the top look longer sooner. The contrast is the trick: a top of 4 centimetres looks like a deliberate crop above tidy sides, but like an overgrown buzz when the sides are the same length.
Plan on a trim every five to six weeks. At each one, we clean up the neckline, tidy around the ears, and taper the sides so they do not balloon. We only touch the top if there is a single uneven area to even out. Book it as Haircut Only and say at the start that you are growing it out; our taper fades page shows the kind of gentle side work that suits a grow-out.
- Weeks 1 to 5: leave everything. Keep the neck tidy at home if you like, but do not touch the top.
- Around week 6: first shaping trim. Neckline, around the ears, and a soft taper on the sides.
- Around months 3 and 4: second and third trims. The sides can now sit a guard or two shorter than the top.
- Around month 5 or 6: decide on a style for the top and have it cut in lightly, such as a textured crop or a short side part.
- After that, cut on a normal schedule for whatever length you choose.
Styling a growing buzz cut
Once the top passes about 3 centimetres, a little product makes a big difference. A matte clay or a light cream gives short hair some direction and hides the uneven spots where whorls push outward. On coily hair, a moisturizer and a pick or sponge shape the growth evenly. Our guide to styling short hair covers the products and techniques in more detail.
Resist the urge to buzz it all off again the first time you have a bad hair day. Almost everyone who grows out a buzz has at least one week where it looks worse than it did the day of the cut, and that week passes.
How long does a buzz cut take to grow out: common questions
Does hair grow back thicker after a buzz cut?
No. Freshly buzzed hair can feel coarser because the blunt ends are all the same length, but cutting does not change the follicle or the thickness of the hair it produces.
Can I grow out a buzz cut into a fade?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways. Keep the sides faded short while the top grows, and you will have a recognizable crew cut or textured crop within a couple of months.
Should I wear a hat while growing out a buzz?
A hat is fine, but a tight one pressed on for hours can flatten the top and push the sides out. Give the hair time uncovered each day so it grows out in a natural direction.
How long for a buzz cut to become a man bun?
Usually well over a year, often closer to two, depending on how long the top must be to tie back. Most people get there with several shaping trims along the way.
