Taper Fade and Full Beard: A Brushed-Back Cut by Mark
Short answer: This cut by Mark Yousif pairs a brushed-back top, a few centimetres long with grey coming through, with sides faded to skin up toward the temple and a short full beard faded into the sideburn. Our gallery files it as a taper fade, but the blend runs to bare skin well above the ear, closer to a mid skin fade. It suits straight hair, a strong jaw and anyone who wants a polished, grown-up shape.

What you are looking at
The photo is a left profile. The top is brushed straight back from the forehead with a little shine, and the length is long enough to lie flat in one direction. Silver threads show through the dark hair on top.
The sides are bare from the neck and around the ear, and the fade darkens gradually up toward the temple and the ridge of the head. Behind the ear the line curves down toward the nape, which is faded out to skin.
Taper or fade: which is this?
Strictly, this is a fade. A taper only shortens the hair at the sideburn and neckline and keeps the sides mostly covered; here the skin runs well up the side of the head. The label in our gallery is the everyday name, not the technical one.
The distinction matters when you ask for it. Say "taper" and you may get far more hair left on the sides. Our fade vs taper comparison lays out the difference.
How the beard is shaped
The beard is short and full, covering the cheeks, jaw and chin at an even length, with a moustache joined at the corners. It is fuller at the chin and slightly shorter as it climbs the cheek.
At the sideburn, the beard is faded down to skin where it meets the haircut. Fade-into-beard blends are one of Mark's leanings: the fade in the hair and the fade in the beard meet at the ear, so the whole side reads as one gradient. Our short boxed beard guide covers similar beard lengths.
How a result like this is built
The brushed-back top is cut first so the fade can be set to match the line where the top hair falls.
- Top: scissor-cut, a little longer at the front so it can sweep back.
- Sides: taken to skin at the bottom, faded upward and dropped behind the ear.
- Beard: taken to a short, even guard, then faded up the sideburn.
- Finish: lined cheek and neck, and product combed through the top.
Who it suits and when to come back
This combination suits straight or slightly wavy hair with enough length to comb back, and faces with a defined jaw. The short full beard adds structure without hiding the face, and grey in the top looks intentional when it is brushed back cleanly.
Plan on every 2 to 3 weeks for the skin fade and beard blend. At home, a light pomade or cream combed back while the hair is damp keeps the shape; read our brushed back hair guide for product advice.
Taper fade and full beard: common questions
Should I say taper or fade to get this?
Say "skin fade". Asking for a taper usually gets you more length on the sides than you see here.
Will brushing my hair back make grey more obvious?
It shows the grey evenly, which tends to look deliberate; a messy top can make it look patchier.
