Nose Waxing vs Trimming: How Long Each Lasts and Which to Choose

Short answer: Nose waxing removes the visible hair at the nostril opening from the root, so it usually stays clear for around three to six weeks. Trimming cuts the same hair at the surface with small scissors or a rotary trimmer, which is painless but grows back into view within days to a week or two. Choose waxing for a longer-lasting clean result, and trimming for quick, zero-sting upkeep between waxes.

How long each result lasts

Waxing lasts several times longer than trimming because it removes the hair from the root instead of cutting it off. After a wax, each hair has to regrow from under the skin before you can see it, so most people stay tidy for around three to six weeks, depending on how fast and coarse their hair is.

A trim leaves the root and the bottom of the shaft in place. The cut ends are only just inside the nostril, so with normal growth they are back at the opening within days if your nose hair is dark and fast-growing, or within a week or two if it is fine. That is why men who trim tend to do it every few days.

Comfort: a second of sting against nothing at all

Trimming is painless when done properly, which is its biggest advantage. A rotary nose trimmer only cuts what enters the guard, and small round-tipped scissors are safe if you only trim what you can see. Our guide on how to trim nose hair walks through doing it without nicking the lining.

Waxing stings, briefly. The wax is pulled out in one motion, your eyes water from reflex, and the feeling is gone within seconds. Most clients say the second time is easier than the first, because they know exactly how short it is. Coarser hair tends to sting a little more.

Hygiene and the hair you should keep

Both methods should only touch the hair at the entrance of the nostril. The finer hair deeper inside helps filter dust and particles from the air, and nobody sees it, so neither waxing nor trimming should go after it. Our answer on whether nose waxing is safe explains that boundary in more detail.

For waxing, hygiene means a fresh applicator for each nostril, wax that is never double-dipped, and clean hands. For trimming, it means a clean trimmer head, rinsed and dried after each use and never shared. Avoid plucking individual nose hairs with tweezers; it is harder on the skin than either method. If you notice a swollen, painful or spreading bump inside the nose after any hair removal, see a doctor.

Using both: a routine that stays tidy

Many men combine them: a wax every month or so, with a light trim for the odd stray hair in between. It works like this:

  1. Add a Nose Wax to your haircut on Booksy, or book it on its own, so every visit leaves the nostrils clear.
  2. For the first two or three weeks, do nothing; there is nothing to trim.
  3. If a stray hair appears before your next visit, snip that one with round-tipped scissors instead of pulling it.
  4. Stop trimming about a week before your next wax, so the hair is long enough for the wax to grip.

Which to choose

Choose waxing if your nose hair is coarse or dark, grows quickly, or you are tired of checking the mirror every few days. It also makes sense before a wedding, photos or a big meeting, because you know nothing will reappear for weeks. Choose trimming if you have sensitive skin, a nasal condition, frequent nosebleeds, or simply want zero discomfort, and speak to a doctor first if you are unsure whether waxing suits you.

At Markcutit the Nose Wax is its own item on Booksy, and a Full Face Wax covers the nose, ears and face together. Like every service it comes with the hot towel, wash and head massage. See the face waxing service for what each covers.

Nose waxing vs trimming: common questions

Does nose waxing make the hair grow back thicker?

No. Removing hair from the root does not change how thick it grows back; regrowth simply looks finer at first because the tip is tapered.

Can I wax my nose at home?

Home kits exist, but it is easy to push the applicator too far or leave wax behind. If you try it, follow the instructions exactly and only treat the visible hair.

What about ear hair?

The same comparison applies: waxing lasts weeks, trimming lasts days. Our Full Face Wax includes the ears, and the ear hair trimming guide covers home upkeep.
