Short Beard Styles: A Chooser by Length, Shape and Upkeep

Short answer: The main short beard styles are stubble (1 to 10 mm), the short boxed beard (about 1 cm with tighter sides), the corporate beard (1 to 2 cm, even and conservative), the circle beard (moustache and chin only) and the anchor (a pointed chin beard with separate moustache). Pick stubble for the least commitment, a boxed or corporate beard for a full look under 2 cm, and a circle or anchor if your cheeks grow in patchy.

Each style below stays under about 2 cm, but they need different amounts of growth, cover different parts of the face and suit different workplaces. Use the table to narrow it down, then read the style's own page.

Stubble: the lowest commitment

Stubble is the short beard with the least growing and the most frequent trimming. Light stubble at a No. 0.5 to No. 1 (roughly 1 to 3 mm) reads as shadow, designer stubble sits around 3 to 5 mm, and heavy stubble up to 10 mm is almost a beard.

It suits nearly everyone and works in most offices, but it needs a trimmer pass every two to four days to stay at one length. Our stubble beard guide covers guard settings and why the neckline still matters.

Short boxed and corporate: full coverage under 2 cm

Choose between these two by how much shape you want. A short boxed beard has tighter sides, a slightly longer chin and squared edges, so it looks sculpted and builds a stronger jaw. A corporate beard is more even, a little longer overall and deliberately understated.

Both need a quick trim at home about once a week and a professional reset every two to three weeks. They pair naturally with a fade: the boxed beard with a sharper skin fade, the corporate beard with a softer taper.

Circle and anchor: for patchy cheeks

If your cheeks fill in slowly, a short style that skips them is often better than waiting months. The circle beard joins moustache and chin in a rounded ring, using the two areas that grow densest for most men.

The anchor beard goes further, with a pointed chin beard running a short way along the jaw and a moustache that floats above it. Both need the cheeks shaved every day or two, which is more razor time than a boxed beard but far less growing time.

How to choose, in four questions

Most people land on the right short beard by answering a few simple questions honestly.

  1. How does your beard grow? Dense everywhere points to boxed or corporate; patchy cheeks point to circle or anchor.
  2. How much time do you want to spend? Stubble and boxed need regular trimmer passes; circle and anchor need daily cheek shaving.
  3. What does your face need? Round faces suit a boxed beard or anchor with a longer chin; long faces suit even stubble or a corporate beard. See our guides to beards for round faces and beards for long faces.
  4. Where are you wearing it? Stubble and corporate beards are the safest for conservative workplaces; the anchor is more of a statement.

Getting the first shape right

Short beards live and die by their lines, because there is so little length to hide an uneven cheek line or a neckline in the wrong place. Letting a barber set those lines once makes home upkeep simple: you just follow them.

Book a Beard Only + Lineup once you have the growth listed above, and bring a photo if you have one. We will tell you honestly whether your growth suits the style yet, or whether another week or two would help.

Short beard styles: common questions

What is the most attractive short beard style?

There is no single answer. A short boxed beard is the most widely flattering because it adds a jawline without much length, but the best one is the style your growth supports.

How long is a short beard?

Roughly anything under 2 cm counts as short. Above that, most people would call it a medium or full beard.

What trimmer guard should I use for a short beard?

Stubble sits around a No. 0.5 to No. 3, a boxed beard often uses a No. 3 or No. 4 on the sides, and corporate beards are usually a No. 4 to No. 6 guard.

Can I grow a short beard with a patchy face?

Yes. A circle beard, anchor or goatee uses the areas that grow densest, and stubble at a short guard hides patchiness well.
