The single most useful thing you can say is whether the moustache should join the chin hair. A connected goatee keeps hair at the corners of the mouth; a Van Dyke needs those corners cleared so the moustache floats above a pointed chin.

How we clear the cheeks without narrowing the goatee

We take the cheeks and jaw down to the skin line last, after the goatee itself is shaped, so the outer edge is placed on purpose rather than left wherever the clippers stopped. Starting from the cheeks tends to eat into the goatee from both sides.

The sequence runs like this: length on the goatee first, then the width marked against the corners of your mouth, then the cheeks cleared with a trimmer up to that mark. After the hot towel, a razor sharpens the outline where bare skin meets hair. That clean contrast is what makes a goatee look intentional.

Why symmetry is easier to judge from the barber's side of the chair

At home you only ever see your goatee reversed and slightly from above, which is why one side creeps wider over a few weeks. From the chair, we check it straight on, from each side and from below the chin.

Before you leave we compare both halves against fixed points on your face: the corners of the mouth, the nostrils and the centre of the chin. If one side has drifted since your last visit, we usually rebuild the outline to the narrower side so nothing gets cut shorter than it needs to be.

• Width: outer edges lined up with the same feature on both sides.
• Bottom: level under the chin, or pointed exactly at the centre for a Van Dyke.
• Moustache corners: joined cleanly, or cleared to an even gap.
• Under the lip: a tidy patch or a clean shave, whichever your style needs.

How often to rebook a goatee trim

Most goatees need the outline reset every two to three weeks, and the cheeks need shaving at home every day or two in between. The outline is the part that drifts; the length changes slowly.

Going from a full beard to a goatee

Yes, we can cut a full beard down to a goatee or Van Dyke in one visit, and it is a common way to try the style without growing it from scratch. We shape the goatee out of the beard first, then remove everything around it.

Two tips before you commit. First, keep the goatee slightly larger than you think on the first cut; we can narrow it next time but cannot put hair back. Second, expect the cheeks to look pale for a few days if they have been covered for months.
