After Movember: keeping the moustache without looking unfinished

If you grew a moustache for Movember, a beardstache lets you keep it in December without the clean-shaven cheeks making it look like a costume. Let a light stubble come back on the cheeks, chin and jaw, and the moustache suddenly looks like part of a plan.

Book in the last days of November or the first week of December. By then the moustache usually has enough length to shape, and a week or so of stubble gives us something to even out. The ratio between the two is explained in our beardstache guide.

What happens in a beardstache appointment

The appointment splits into three jobs, and each gets a different tool. The stubble is clippered to one even length, the moustache is combed out and cut with scissors, and the edges are finished with a razor.

1. We agree the stubble length and how long the moustache should sit over the lip.
2. The cheeks, chin and jaw are clippered evenly, then faded down on the neck.
3. The moustache is combed down and scissor-cut along the lip line, corners last.
4. The cheek line and neckline are razored clean.
5. The free hot towel treatment, wash and head massage finish it off.

Do the stubble yourself, leave the lines to us

The stubble is the easy part to maintain at home: run a trimmer at the same setting over the cheeks, chin and jaw every few days. What people get wrong is the moustache shape and the neckline, and those are what a reset every two weeks or so protects.

If you want to stretch visits, keep the stubble going yourself and book when the moustache starts catching on your lip or the neck looks fuzzy. A stubble trim on its own is also an option if the moustache is still growing.

Use an adjustable trimmer and note the setting that matches what we left you with. Going up or down by even half a millimetre between sessions shifts the ratio, and the moustache starts to look either lost or stuck on.

Pairing a beardstache with a haircut

Short, tidy sides suit a beardstache, because the moustache should be the loudest thing on your head. Book Haircut + Beard and we will set the sideburn length so the stubble and the sides meet evenly.

When a beardstache is the wrong call

If your moustache grows thinner than your cheeks, the contrast a beardstache needs is hard to get, and even stubble all over is often kinder. We will tell you at the consultation rather than sell you a shape that fights your growth.
